Well geez, let me think... maybe somebody would want a hybrid, but also a decent looking car? Not everybody that buys a car cares about total hp.

Your reasoning makes zero sense. Why would someone who thinks a $27K hybrid that's ugly go out and buy the next available hybrid at $100k+ because it "looks better"?

If I had endless amounts of money sure I'd buy it. But hell, that won't ever happen.

Has anybody noticed the fact that if this was actually taken to the track, the batteries would end up being dead weight soon, and then you're left with a $100k (is that what it costs?) otherwise underpowered car, carting around an extra useless engine? It's a totally asinine concept, even if it is at least notable that they will have a very fast car that can get awesome gas mileage.

So, why make it a sports car?

Is this the only hybrid vehicle they have? If so, then yeah, it would be kind of dumb to target just that market. But i would bet they have other hybrid vehicles as well. This could just be to test the water, see how well it does.

Not everybody's sport's car is just a TOY to them.

Why do not other sports cars do it? It seems like silly marketing crap to me. I know an electric has nice low end torque, but even the million dollar exotics don't have it, because gas still reigns supreme.

I'm guessing it's a technology issue. Hybrid is still an emerging technology, and difficult to do well.

I may well be just a design exercise right now, but if it proves to be something really beneficial to sports cars, I'm guessing everyone else will jump on.

For awhile, Porsche was the only one with a turbo, and it didn't even work so well.

Um because people buy things based on aesthetics all the time?

I think that you guys are TOTALLY missing the point. The Volta is just a technology demonstrator to show what a hybrid sports car would be be like.

Hybrids are going mainstream (I mean, there's gonna be a hybrid Accord and Camry for goodness sake) and this is just a showing what could be done with the technology.

Of course it is. What else would it be? You drive to work in the viper every day? Haul a trailer in the 911 turbo? Get real! They should waste less time on this, and more time on getting intelligent hybrids to market like the hylander, or another family sedan.

Yeah, that's all it is I'm sure. In the future pretty well all cars may be hybrid, but I'll lay it all on the line and predict that sports cars won't be the vanguard in this arena

I think you're right - it is just a proof of concept, and won't actually hit storerooms.

No, but you don't haul a trailer with a Honda civic either. Moron.

I can see you're in need of a break from Anandtech, because obviously all the Volta buyers will haul trailers. The only moron is the guy who thinks that somebody goes from a 4 seater car to a 2 seater car, and spends $70k to do it, simply because it is "decent looking". LOL. I've said my piece, and yours was sh*t, so continue to rehash it as much as you like, no matter how patently buffoonish it is.

Who said anything about hauling trailers? You really are a moron if you believe that all sports car owners only drive their car out on weekends to the park, and that they don't use it in daily activities.

I agree there. I know a guy who uses his 911 Turbo as a daily driver.

Then it would have nothing to do with being a HYBRID as opposed to wanting something aesthetically pleasing, or because they have money to piss away. Jackoff Greentree buys a hybrid because maybe he hopes to save $500 a year in gas. The purpose of pissing away $100K because you want to save money on gas but want a good looking sports car makes no sense. $100K sports cars are rarely daily drivers anyway - you would never see the cost savings in gas b/t driving a $100K Porsche and a $100K Volta.

That car must have some very small ground clearence if it had to be backed up on the flatbed instead of being driven front first.

It will sell to all the hippie celebrities who want a hybrid for the green image, but don't want an ugly prius. That way they can drive a supercar and still rub it in our faces that they are eco friendly.

So because somebody is thinking aesthetically, they throw all other variables and considerations out the window? Granted, most people won't care, but when you're getting good performance out of it, some people might consider it some of the benefits to hybrid.

So you honestly believe this car will get 60 mpg if you drive it like a sports car?

I have absolutely no idea... this is the first time i've seen or heard of this car. But i do know that if it can get similar performance to a conventional engine, then it's a viable alternative for some people. Somebody who can afford this car most likely won't buy it purely for the mpg, but if you can get good mpg, low emission and be eco-friendly, look good, and get similar performance... it'll sell.

its just a marketing exercise. hybrids are not cool. prius? not cool. not at all. but what is cool? sports cars. sure practical cars like vans and suvs would sell better, but theyre still not cool. (the highlander is no escalade...) toyota just wants the press that this car will generate. the volta serves the same purpose as the tomahawk v12 motorcycle, chrystler ME12 etc.
