Now I could care less about TPMS. My winter wheels don't even have a set installed. The Evo can only be paired with one set at a time anyway and the dealer charges about 90 min shop time to re-encode. No thanks, I'm capable of checking pressure on my own.

Not having TPMS on your wheels will cause a bright yellow or red light to illuminate on the dash. Nothing like driving round with this light in your face all the time. Most people who utilize snow tires, put TPMS on their snow tires. TPMS is a safety issue and should not be discounted, not to mention that it can make your tires last longer and extend your fuel.

I am not totally sure. I visually checked my tires and didn't see anything, but that's not much of an indication. I'll have to check the pressure Saturday morning and fill the tire(s) up that need air. If the alarm trips again, I'll know I'm leaking air or the TMPS are going wacky.

Are these covered under warranty at all? Ah crap on second though... I think my 3yr/36000 is no longer valid because I'm at like 37,0000 miles now Of course....Never fails. Hopefully it's just some low pressure and no leaks or sensor malfunctions

I'm sure this falls under general wear items like headlights and whatnot and wouldn't have been covered under your factory warranty anyway.

TPMS offers me personally - zero benefits. By the time it illuminates on the dash the event has already happened (blow out, low pressure, whatever). It's there for the dummies that never ever check their pressure. I do all my own maintenance. A TPMS sensor isn't going to point out dry rot, broken belts, sidewall damage, alignment issues, wear issues, etc that I would catch.

Oh but it works with the stability control...yeah that's the first thing that gets turned off when I get in the car. Especially in winter as A. it attempts to kill any fun, and B. it interferes too much and makes the car less controllable. I know about weight transfer, traction circle, counter steering, and how to control a car - having a system come in and cut power when I need it or try to brake individual wheels in an attempt to determine where I want to go yields less control. I've tested this out on tracks and in snowy conditions. I have more control without the electronic ninnies.

Same for ABS, zero benefit to me. I already know how to threshold and cadence brake and I would rather be in control. ABS in winter just increases stopping distances which regular folk don't seem to understand. They really need to teach how to avoid using ABS in drivers ed, it's one of the first things they teach you during any track instruction.

Unbelievable. Every once in a while I find a driver like you that gets involved in an accident. Guess what happens when the police and insurance company find out the safety equipment has been disabled. It then becomes your responsibility to prove that the safety equipment made no difference in the accident. You also risk the insurance company not paying your claim. Not to mention (in a civil suit) most judges and juries don't believe that sane people would disable their own safety equipment. Its a very up hill battle should you get into an accident. Glad you don't live around me.

Sure, but you have to live in the real world of today, where disabled TPMS seems like it could indeed be a problem with the insurance company, and with an accident claim.

This is a federally mandated safety system, after all.

It would be a shame to have an accident and have your claim denied, or reduced, because you didn't like TPMS and disabled it, allowing a shift of blame onto you.

So, we can ask a question or two. To those who have disabled/bypassed/altered their TPMS, does your insurance company know? Do you think they would be interested in the info?

This is a federally mandated system for all cars sold, just like how we're going to need backup cameras, etc for all the people who can't keep up with their vehicle maintenance or avoid running over their kids. But, I'm going to avoid going on my soap box too much.

Do you have anything to back up that talk regarding insurance claims being denied? I'm too lazy to go grab my automobile insurance policy right now and will just hope someone will post it for me to read. If anything, I would think it might fall under the required manual upkeep of the vehicle?

I "bypass" my tpms by ignoring that little yellow light on my dash all summer long when I have my summer tires on. The light goes away in the winter when I put my factory (with tpms) wheels back on with winter tires. I wouldn't mind if I just had to buy another set of tpms sensors, but my car can only read one sensor at a time. Each time I switch tires, I would need to bring my car to the dealer and get the car "reprogrammed." F that.

I didn't actually make any definite claim.

It just seems likely that disabling a safety system would interest the insurance company, and lawyers and crash investigators. Whether it's specifically mentioned in a policy or not.
