Well, Gitzo makes some really fricking nice tripods.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006...37414-2535358?%5Fencoding=UTF8&s=photo

Of course that is only the tripod portion. If you want to do anything, you really are going to have to add a ball-joint to the top which will add even more money (note, the tripod I chose was just a random one, there are many slight variations on the gitzo pod but they are mostly cheaper than that one).

They are EXPENSIVE but they will last you forever and they are extrememly lightweight.

You're kidding right? Your recommending a tripod that costs as much as the camera itself. There are plenty of nice inexpensive tripods available. I currently use a Manfrotto 3001 with 3D head, which I paid $125 for, but that's still probably out of most people's budget unfortunately.

If you are looking for a decent tripod that isn't going to break the bank I suggest these models:

There's a lot to think about when looking for a tripod. Anybody seriously looking for a tripod for their DSLR needs to do a bit of research based on planned usage and future upgrade plans for camera and lenses. It's definitely cheaper in the long run to pay more for a good tripod up front, then having to pay for each incremental upgrade to get to a final satisfying point. For anybody that is looking to buy their first tripod, check out this article by Thom Hogan to understand what's involved in tripod selection: http://www.bythom.com/support.htm. Also, check out a couple of photography forums for advice. I personally recommend the forums at http://www.fredmiranda.com. A lot of helpful people over there; I learned a lot about tripods before making my decision from the people in the General Gear section there. Of course, personal tests at a good camera shop, i.e. Kenmore Cameras or Glazer's Camera in the Seattle area, go along way.

That said, the Manfrotto 3001 mentioned above is a nice legset; it's pretty light and supports a decent amount of weight. All that's needed is a decent head of your choice, be it a ball head or pan/tilt/swivel head. I know it sounds expensive compared to the $13 tripod listed above, but do you really want to trust your expensive camera to a $13 tripod?

Funny thing is that tdawg's link says that you are eventually just going to buy a nice carbon tripod and that you might as well do it first before spending money on a ton of other tripods.
He asked for a good recomendation, I gave the best.

Granted most people dont need that much and those 3001's will do alright with a fairly cheap head.

Also, before I did my quick amazon search, I really didnt know the total value of the gitzo setup I have enjoyed using so much (my dad is a professional photographer, I know a lot about cameras in my own right but when it comes to suplementary equipment, I usually dont ask questions)
