There's a lot to think about when looking for a tripod. Anybody seriously looking for a tripod for their DSLR needs to do a bit of research based on planned usage and future upgrade plans for camera and lenses. It's definitely cheaper in the long run to pay more for a good tripod up front, then having to pay for each incremental upgrade to get to a final satisfying point. For anybody that is looking to buy their first tripod, check out this article by Thom Hogan to understand what's involved in tripod selection:

http://www.fredmiranda.com. A lot of helpful people over there; I learned a lot about tripods before making my decision from the people in the General Gear section there. Of course, personal tests at a good camera shop, i.e. Kenmore Cameras or Glazer's Camera in the Seattle area, go along way.
That said, the Manfrotto 3001 mentioned above is a nice legset; it's pretty light and supports a decent amount of weight. All that's needed is a decent head of your choice, be it a ball head or pan/tilt/swivel head. I know it sounds expensive compared to the $13 tripod listed above, but do you really want to trust your expensive camera to a $13 tripod?
