Yes, and they keep telling us that because it's a local case, the locals have to call them in before they can step in.

Crap... So you have tried the news? It may make an interesting editorial for someone. Also, they may be able to help out with a web cam/video camera or something. I wish I could think of something else to help...

Edit:

hell, if you could get it on any online paper you might be able to get your story on Fark.com. Doing that might generate enough web trafic that a bigger agency might grab the story. Also, Fark does have a large user base and someone there might be able to help out more.

Trust me the doggy can take care of herself.

I think the crimes office is handled by the state police. but I will certanly check to make sure.

They are the news. As for local tv, we called. We're too far away. Being in the middle of nowhere has distinct disadvantages.

hey,
I used to work for an ISP. The email can be traced as most smtp servers keep logs for at least a week. I suggest you contact the webmaster at the domain which the email came from.

from them you should at least be able to get the ip address of the person that emailed you.

using that ip address you should be able to contact the ISP that owns the ip address, and they may be able to tell you where the email came from.

Assuming you get that far, their is also a chance that the person used a public computer and from their you can't do much.

I had a friend who also was receiving threatening emails. It was eventually tracked to a public computer at a local college. from there it was a dead end.

good luck.

I agree. This is a good idea. Especially if you could get a story out with "just the facts." I'm sure you can find enough help in this forum to make sure that the story gets plenty of "traffic." Then, you can show the story to the local police, and show them that a national internet news agency actually picked up on your story and your hometown is now in the spotlight. They might feel a little pressure on them if they realize they're under the scrutiny of 10's of 1000's of people in the united states. (which will probably only be ATOT 100's of times each.) Nonetheless, if they're as internet un-savvy as you suppose, perhaps it'll work.

I think it's a great idea, but where to start?

I think it's a good idea too.

As for them being internet un-savy, there is one younger officer with a lot of fire in him that knows a bit about computers. However, one of the older officers (great guy, but doesn't know much about computers asked us what kind of company "Micro Soft" (that's how he spelled it) was.

No, I'm in VA.

I think when someone asked "Do they live in Mex. City" you answered "No, a few miles away" and I read that to mean "...from Mexico City." not "....from me."

haha

Someone said something that made me wonder. E-mail of course crosses state lines, so it might be possible to now get the state police or feds involved. You'd really have to talk to your lawyer or call the state police/feds again. It is a longshot, but a threat across state lines is what it would be. Look at how they bust people for mail/wire fraud. Good luck either way.

What about a college online newspaper? I am sure some student would be more than willing to take this on especially if we can get a lot of hits on it. You can even tell them that it doesn't even need to be in the newspaper just online. After that we can put it on Fark and other forums for people to read.
