I have tried gaming with my MS Trackball Optical (thumb one), i tried for a long time but never got as good as with my trusty mouse
Do u guys reckon i would have more success with the EXplorer version using fingers?
It'd be nice not to have a mouse at all so that the callous on my wrist can have a rest

Trackballs are great for relieving the stress used with a mouse. But for gaming, nothing can compare to a mouse (all the joystick people would disagree with me, I'm sure). I use a trackball rarely, but mouse all the time.

Heh, DocSmarts, missed your post.
looks like a trip to the online store is in order tonight
Wonder how many pointing devices you can connect to windows before it gets upset about it?

I am using the one that operates using the index and middle fingers (MS Trackball Explorer), and it gives them a lot of excersize. I play the piano in my free time so it always keeps me warmed up.

As for the difference between the thumb and fingers: I think the fingers offer more control, but it takes some time getting used to.

Or you can just increase the mouse pointer speed.

My friend has a trackball and I can't use it at all. It's the kind that you have to use your thumb to navigate. Maybe I would fair better with a trackball that is to be used with the other fingers on my hand. But then again, I'm very happy with my mouse, and I don't think I could use a trackball in FPS and still keep accuracy.

I agree. I have an optical with what some say is an insane curser speed. I bet I use little more desk space with both my monitors with mouse movement than with a trackball. And I bet the learning curve is less than changing altogether. I have really good accuracy even at these speeds.

I think there is more fatigue with your arm & wrist staying stationary than with movement.

IMO

My thumb action tracball is perfectly fine for gaming for me at least. No game I haven't been able to beat with it, in fps games anyway. In strategy games I don't think it matters either way.
