tracking hard drive Read/Write Access

My hard drive LED keeps flashing constantly even when no program (as far as I can tell) is utilizing it. This is a recent development, and would like to find out what program is causing the constant access.

I'm running winxp pro with 512 megs of ram on a P4 2.4 gig machine. Is there a program out there that'll keep track all read/write attempts to the hard drive? I would like to use such a tool to find the culprit program.

You don't mention which OS, but presuming it's a windows based one check out Filemon from http://www.sysinternals.com

It could be your CD-ROM doing all the flashing. Check out the thread, there is a link at the very bottom that might help.

Thanks for the link...I download the file monitor program and found that Aol Instant Messenger is accessing the HD constantly (specifically the file c:\program files\aim95\aimres.dll). I'm running the latest final release of AIM v5. I've also tried the latest beta, and both constantly are accessing this file. It's not a RAM issue since I have 512 megs and hardly anything else running (plenty of free ram according to task manager in Win XP).

Any ideas why AIM would access this file constantly, and if there's a workaround?

motoamd, that is an interesting theory. I'd like to know more about it, except i'm not a subscriber and therefore can't acccess your link. Any possible way you could cut and copy the link you're referring to in this topic?
