OK, two things.

I have both systems, and like the both, so dont cry foul

A. NEITHER system is losing (in America). They are BOTH good, selling systems.
B. If I had a PS2 since 1999 or whenever it came out, I MIGHT want to trade it after three years of use. Plus, games can be found for 9.99 now almost anywhere.
C. Microsoft has so much money they don't need to worry about market share. Sony, on the other hand, is lacking in this department.
D. Almost EVERYONE who only owns one system is quite brainwashed. Don't slam microsoft.

A. WRONG!! Look at any gaming magazine that shows game sales data and it is very OBVIOUS who is losing. I get both EGM and Game Informer which list software sales ranking for all systems. XBOX only has four games in the top twenty. Gamecube has ONE....guess who owns the other 15 spots (including the #1)? This has been the case for a very long time now.

B. Why trade in something that works and has longevity and still has great games coming out for it?

C. Microsoft does have a lot of money. But they do worry about market share...they do have a board of directors and thousands of shareholders that care whether or not their "shares" are thrown away.

D. Wrong again. Just maybe the majority of people who own ONE system (PS2) researched them all and found out which one would give them the most bang for their buck...years later, they realized that they made a good decision.

I couldn't imagine ANYONE doing this deal! A PS2 AND 3 games for an already outdated XBOX?

Something is very wrong with this deal.

Please note I am letting off a long and had sigh while I am writing this. Fanboys are sad. Like all systems equally.

A. Who said we were talking about games here? I'm not talking about games. Are you? As a matter of fact, the very reason I got PS2 is because of the larger AMOUNT of better games. Unless you plan on buying all 15 of those games that are on the top 20, what difference does it make what system you have? Also, the Xbox's core is 3x as fast and powerful as PS2's core, so we get better quality graphics in games. I.E. most games that are both on Xbox and PS2 I get for my Xbox, simply because the graphics demolish PS2's graphics.

B. In that case, what's wrong with staying with that old Sega Master System? That system has hundreds of GREAT games, and still has longevity. It's just a matter of preference. Regardless of what you say, the superior hardware on Xbox gives it more "longevity" (although I don't know what you mean by this term, because my NES still works.) And the Xbox DOES have superior hardware.

C. What I was saying is that market share doesn't mean as much to Microsoft. Sony's share would drop sharply if PS2 went out of style. Microsoft's stock would drop five or ten dollars, and bam, stay stable. Most likely even less than that. Do you think Microsoft makes more money on $300 software that cost them $3 to produce or $200 hardware that cost them $150 to produce? Your call.

D. I don't think Xbox has been out for "years". The only system competing with PS2 when it was released was Dreamcast. In the same rite, Dreamcast's sales were already slumping, and PS2 claimed close to 60 or 70% of the market share early. When Xbox came out at the end of last year, it had to fight for its market share, and it has been doing a fair job of taking away shares that Sony held for those years.

What do you define as bang for the buck? You get better hardware for $200 with Xbox. That's bang for the buck when it comes down to systems. And unless you plan on buying 30 games, either system will do you the same justice. Xbox has around 20 games that I like. PS2 has close to 60 or 70. But here's the thing: I only have 3 games for each system. See my point?

I can clearly see why someone would trade in a PS2 (which normally gives $130 trade in or something similar) and three $5 trade in games for a brand new Xbox. Especially now that more and more games are multiplatform.

Be sure you are able to back up your statements when you make them. I'm sorry I seem so one sided in my arguments, but sometimes it is necessary to take extremes against someone who refuses to open ears.

Enjoy.

PS2: I like a loto f the PS2's games, but like with PS1, FAR more of its games are simply garbage than there are of Quality. This is one of the areas where the Dreamcast *Excelled* so well: More games were *good* than bad. If only Sony could get this.

GC: It's a nice system with some very good games; like the old DC, it has more good games than bad, but the selection is small. There are enough good games coming, however, that I feel justified in keeping the GC, and after all is said and done, it *is* more powerful than PS2.

XBox: Like GC, there are fewer games but the games are of a better quality. Look at the likes of SPlinter Cell if you want to argue whether PS2 is even *close* to XBox in terms of raw horsepower. Now that the second generation of software is coming out and developers are mastering the 'Box, we're going to see this system pull steadily away from PS2 in terms of graphical presentation. The game quality is already there, the *value* is already there (system and 2 games for $199, WITH hard drive, WITH online capability, versus $199 for no games, no hard drive and no online..duh...)

My bet is that this Xmas XBox will outsell PS2 due simply to overall *value* of the package. In 2 years time, the only thing that Sony will be able to do to compete with Xbox in terms of quality games with insane graphics is going to be a PS3, and as was reported in an interview with one of the VP's for XBox recently, "Sony will not get ONE DAY on the shelf without XBox2 there to compete next time. Not ONE." Maintaining a 2 year lead is easy; taking the lead when you're in a fight from practically day one is much harder, as we've seen with GC and XBox duking it out over the last year.

All three systems have good games, but I'll tell you this: If it's available on any other system and I want it, I WON'T buy the SOny version. Why? Because of what Sony did to Bleem! Bleem was an honest company with a good product that they were completely within their legal rights to sell, and Sony crushed them through excessive and unreasonable litigation even though the courts ruled against them time and time again.

Personally, I'll enjoy what I can from them right now, but when it comes to it, I won't shed a tear when those bastards are trailing at a distant third.

DMA

I agree with that for the most part except you criticize what Sony did to bleem look what MSFT is trying to do to every company
SGI (Open GL licensing), Netscape , open source (Palladium)

Also IMO 90% of games on all systems are crap, PS2 more games = more good games / more crap, same with X-box and GC

also since it is a DirectX 8 platform I dont know how much better looking games are going to get

I dont doubt there is room for improvement but i wouldnt expect it to increase by leaps and bounds

I own a GC and a PS2

and am considering an X-box because of splinter cell

*sigh* guess I'll put in another off-topic post.

A co-worker is a console slave....console this, console that....xbox of course.

Anhow, he was saying that if you've modded your X-box your SOL if you try to go live. Don't have details, but if I understand right, mod your xbox you can't play on-line.

Nice eh?

ahhh well.....good luck to all out there.

If they take gamecube and a couple of games I may do it. I do like the gamecube games, but I want to play older stuff on my TV.
Chip the box, play MAME, genesis, SNES, etc on my XBOX.
Believe it or not I wouldn't pirate actual games on XBOX. I would buy them like HALO for 30 at bestbuy.

The trade in 2 games and get a new game for $10 is still in effect. I know because I just did it 10 mins ago. I traded in some games I got from the X-Box training program. I trade 6 crappy semi old games for Metal Gear Solid 2:Substance and Splinter Cell on pre-order. As far as the X-Box vs ps2, X-Box doesn't have GTA3: Vice City, but PS2 doesn't have Halo 2 coming out. So it's a preference and I prefer the X-Box, to each his own. But as of now this is a hot deal.

Too bad you forgot the average consumer has no idea what an included harddrive and broadband adapter will do for them

OK... Let's get back to this deal.. I just called my EBGAMES store here in Chicago... YES! They are providing a swap... What is even better is that they give you a free dvd kit, 2 free games and of course a new XBOX... I own a PS2 and would still want it if not for the fact that it is slowly dying on me... Also I keep thinking Sony might release a PS3 later and if that is backward compatible, well....

I find this thread humorous.

I have an XBox, and recently picked up a PS2. I was playing Vice City last night and my wife makes the comment "Those graphics look horrible." Which made me realize that the graphics on Vice City sort of suck compared to other games, but the game is still fun. I am surprised it gets as high a graphics rating as it does considering the jaggies and the blocky looking objects.

How good of shape does the PS2 have to be in. Do they need all the cables and controller too? Thanks.

-The DVD face tray broke off and has trouble opening sometime.
-Wasn't reading blue disc so, I opened it up and adjusted the laser. Now it works fine.

Well I am not sure if they'll take that... Better call them first. Our EB over here is kinda picky about looks... I mean the games that they want, they stressed that it's got to have the instruction and dvd case too..

Yes, they need cables and controller, but neither the PS2 nor the cables need to work.
We traded in a dead PS2 and a dog-chewed controller, making this a Hot Deal.

I really hate SUV whiners. A bad driver can be dangerous in ANY car. So for all the SUV haters please feel free to step out in front of my SUV and stop me.

This thread is already OT, so I may as well say it...SUV's drivers suck! actually, this is true from my observations...no doubt bad drivers exist for all types of cares, but the thing about SUV drivers is they can drive wrecklessly and even if they slam into someone's poor accord or camry or maxima, the damage to the SUV will be minimal and so will the injuries to the SUV driver...it's kinda common sense...

most drivers in NJ suck regardless of the type of car anyways.

It's all perspective based children
You have 56Kbps and live out in the country then it's pre-determined. You play Counter-Strike with your GeForce 2. Since you like the experience you go out and buy a PS2 cuz that's what little 9 yr old neighborhood boy went out and got it and the graphics look awesome (relatively speaking comparing it to CS with GF2.)

You have broadband and live in the city. You have a TV bigger than 19". You have a GeForce 4 ti (not mx) and like RTCW or UT2003 (why? cuz your ping is under 150ms, usually 50-100ms).

Remember if I live in India a little moped is much better than a small sedan car. Everyone one says I hate so and so place and love such and such place. However, if there's a job offer with extremely large pay you'd be living in Alaska or Tijuana in a heartbeat.

America is land of instant-gratification...so those that wanted something 'Now..now ..gimme..gimme' got what they wanted a PS2. Well guess no one has ever heard (certainly not the masses) best thing come to those who wait.

I'm not gonna state my opinion because most likely your perspective is different than mine so it's irrelevant. Just call me the master pscyho...err..psychoanalyst.

I got my PS2 the day it came out from Amazon.com and it cannot play DVD's anymore...It is now a $300 (launch price) ps1 / audio cd player :|. This deal sounds like a good way to get rid of my PS2 if it cannot be fixed for free (any info on this?). However, I don't have any ps2 games...Does anyone know which 3 PS2 games that I can buy for cheap? Thanks

Also, when does this promotion end?

I noticed your in California, if you have an Electronic Fry's near you check them. I've seen games go for as little as 7 bucks from time to time and $10 regularly.

I have both systems and I have to say that my Ps2 is starting to collect dust. I added a Matrix modchip and a 120 gig hd to it and this thing rocks. You can play divx, mpeg, etc.. Emu's and the graphics are superior. The only reason I keep my ps2 around is for Vice City. The Xbox is a great system with a lot of potential.

"Anyway, sorry for going on with this, but I hate bashers who talk out of their ass. If you have an opinion state it, but don't trash the competition. " by Askani

You must have misread my post, there was no ill-intentions. Considering that the majority of households(>50%) still do not have broadband, excluding dial-up users IS a big deal. I follow gaming news/information and consider myself extremely knowledgeable on the subject. You may have experiences with no-brain fanboys, however don't disrespect me by including me in the same category. If you want some credible gaming info let me know, I'll be happy to educate you.

For the deal. If you are tired of your PS2 and have older games and interest in the Xbox - by all means consider it. You are getting a lot of value for your used machine here.

It's a marketing program being run by EB, not Microsoft genius. If it was being run by MS they'd be doing it themselves. Can't you use at least half of your Sony fanboy brain and figure that out?

Man are you stupid. It is being run by microsoft , it says it right on the flyer. Ask any EB employee and they will tell you. How would microsoft run it themselves have you mail them your PS2?
