The only thing is I can't find the intersections listed in New Jersey - they say there are 14 of them.

This camera was a really small one tied to the traffic light pole itself, but the pictures I see of these traffic cameras are all big external devices.

The economy's down, gotta balance the books somehow.

What burns me up is that red-light cameras, unlike speeding cameras, really COULD be about safety. Running red lights (unlike speeding) is always a safety issue. But when they're catching cities reducing the length of the yellow light--in other words, increasing the danger--it's pretty obvious that "safety" is just the buzzword used to sell these things to the public.

Can any of you good googlers find any info on this, whether its the law itself (so I can see what it requires/penalties) and/or where the cameras are located?

I can't find anything

Especially since I KNOW I didn't run the light - it was yellow when I entered the intersection. But could have sworn I saw a flash.

We have tons of them here in the DFW area of Texas. Have had them in Plano since 2002. They mark most intersections here with a big sign warning about the use of cameras. I think though that the one near my place is a hazard, the dual flashes have blinded me more than once when coming across the intersection after my light turns green. My dad got a ticket and wanted to go around paintballing them (not that he ever would).

red light cameras in theory are a good idea, but in philly they shorten the yellow light to catch more people. why can't the city just be fucking honest for once?

you know what, I am actually for this lol. people these days are getting ridiculous with running red lights. people don't start slowing for yellow anymore, they just fly by. I'm pretty good with stopping so I have no problem with this. fuck the other people lol

Those cameras must be great fun in the winter. Trying to stop suddenly for a changing traffic light, especially if there's a lovely patch of black ice on a hill, can be fairly impossible.
Yeah yeah, "Going too fast for the conditions." That's the same kind of catch-all cop-out that UPS uses for dodging insurance payouts: "Insufficient packaging."

I guess the other option would be an increased police presence; then you do of course run the risk of having some of them acting like such big dicks that they'd get Jpeyton hard.

So which do you deal with: Police who have some degree of subjectivity in deciding who to go after, or a traffic camera that'll even catch you if you're only 0.1 inches inside the intersection, and the risk of having asshole city officials shorten the yellow-light delay?
I suppose the solution to the latter would be an pleasantly violent little riot, and instill some good old "fear'o'god" back into the minds of those who abuse their power.

wtf?

all your photo enforced lights are 50 bucks.

check them in california. every single one is $351 or more.

Cali just increased their court costs too, from something like $25 to around $50, this has no direct link to the ticket. Regardless of what you're there for, it's another charge you get when you show up to pay your ticket or try to fight it. Seeing how thousands of people are in court every day this fee bump will generate a ton of money. Doesn't help us that some of the lights with camera definitely go from yellow to red waaaay to fast.

Every day we inch closer and closer to becoming a full blown police state.

They can be good and bad. I was caught at one and the picture they sent me clearly shows I was in the intersection at the time of red (when it snaps the pic). I definitely don't do that anymore even if I can judge when it's still safe to run a yellow/red - I told my dad about it and everytime he's at that intersection, he's assuming a yellow-red soon and actually slows down before it even turns... sometimes he'll even pull over if he sees the "don't walk" flashing. That kind of thing can cause traffic backup, etc. Having to watch out for a quick turn of the lights everytime through there is the worst of it.

so let's just watch three or four more cars go through AFTER the light changes red then...they won't hurt anyone...

a few years ago, it was just one car that you had to worry about, but now, because some people think their time is more important than everyone else's, you have multiple cars going through after the light changes to red. I can't even count how many times in Dallas where I have a green light and 3 other cars still go through....

Well, back in 2006 I got smashed by someone running a red light as I was making a left hand turn. The ticket the guy got after totaling my car didn't keep him from plowing me though...

Hmmmm, you may want to restructure that last sentence.
