Alright calm down people. I drive all the time, and I see plenty of back roads that are uncontrolled 3 way intersections, but I've never seen a 4 way.

I'm sure they're out there, though.

Person on the right goes first under equal conditions, otherwise it should be self explanatory.

Not leaving the area you live in is pretty much the definition of sheltered, no?

In MN it's the person on the right, but I'd assume that's everywhere. However, if you value your life, I'd stop anyway.

there's also some idiotic fvcktards here too.

we're sheltered because we don't drive through residential neighborhoods? i assume you guys mean like a housing development kind of area?

just because you live in a $500,000 home doesn't mean we all do...oh wait, this is atot, we do live in $500,000 homes! duh!

Nothing to do with $500k homes. Old areas have more uncontrolled intersections than suburbs anyways...

edit: I was actually implying that sheltered people that live in the 'burbs have never taken a drive through the ghetto.

I've been through a variety of areas in a multitude of states, and I can't recall a time that I've seen a 4-way intersection without at least a stop or yield sign posted. It's possible I've come across some, but again, I can't actively remember any.

Damn you're right. Looks like I gotta drive to California so I can drive around residential neighborhoods that are too retarded / lazy to put stop signs at intersections.

But then the woman smoking while on her cellphone behind you will plow into you at 30mph...

Defensive driving FTW.

There are at least 20 uncontrolled intersections within a mile or 2 of my house. Like I said before, they are everywhere, you just do not realize it.

I just thought I should pint this out: no one has the right of way. Ever. The lay states the driver must YIELD the right of way to another. There really is a difference.

So you have never driven before, correct? They are all over the place; in every state, including PA. You just don't recognize them as you go though them if you are not a driver. If you are a driver, I weep for other drivers in PA.

I honestly can't think of a time that I have seen a 4 way with no stop signs either the same thing too and I am from Pittsburgh also (we both go to University of Pittsburgh)...

You've never driven in a residential zone?

You must not have recognized it as such. Usually they're in areas where traffic flow is very low, and you're the only car near the intersection 99% of the time anyway.

Damn, I was way off. Map of my neighberhood, roughly 2/3rds of a mile around my house. Results? 71 uncontrolled intersections within about 2/3rds of a mile.

2 intersections have stop lights (blue)
26 intersections have stop signs (red, marked where stop signs are, one dot per sign)
65 uncontrolled 3 way intersections (purple, forgot to mark 3)
6 uncontrolled 4 way intersections (also purple)

i had to think hard to realize that almost every small intersection in my neighborhood is a 4 way uncontrolled intersection... i slow, and if cars are loser to going thru than i am ill stop for them. if it seems they are going to go thru regardless of me being closer, ill stop for them. personally, i like my truck and dont want to repaint it right now... ill cede to another driver if it keeps me on the road and scratch free.

That still doesn't make sense to me. Granted, I live in a forest area so you don't always have a clear view of all the signs in a perpendicular lane of traffic. Also, the shape of a sign is not going to be as clear at an angle as it would be straight on. To verify this kind of thing, means you'd have to at least slow down, if not stop, every time you came to an intersection.

Is what you'd have to be looking for to verify whether the other lane of traffic has a stop sign.

A lot of the stop signs around here have red reflective tape on the poles, and some even have red backs. But you are correct, it is almost impossible to know unless you have gone though the intersection the other way.

Uh, if you come to an intersection where you're trusting ONLY people's driving skills to prevent your own death, slow down and make sure you'll survive.

there aren't many examples of uncontrolled intersections around here. one in st. catharines comes to mind (which is on the driving test route).

I dont think we have any 4 way intersections without some kind of yield or stop sign here in NJ. If we do, i havent been through them. We do have some roundabouts (traffic circle) though, and when going through a roundabout, you give way to traffic coming from the left.

I remember being with some cousin-in-laws in the barrios of Mexico City at night. They had intersections like that, and people would use the driving lights ONLY to save gas. Scared the crap outta me!

We do have them in NJ. When I took my driving lessons my instructor took me to a neighborhood and taught me how to deal with uncontrolled intersections. They're mostly in sparsely trafficked residential areas. You probably wouldn't know one if you drove through it, because you don't have a sign and it's pretty rare to meet another car at one.

Traffic circles are a different story, and they usually have yield signs at the entrance so it is explicit. At some circles where one road is more prominent than the other(s) there are even yield/stop signs in the middle of the circle so the people entering the circle have the right of way. This is true of the 202/206/28 circle in Somerville and the 202/31 circle in Flemington just off the top of my head.

Hency my post stating "I dont think we have any"

The two circles you referenced do indeed have traffic signs posted, but there is one on Rt 28 in Bound Brook with no signage at all and it works just fine...
