I'm wondering if the guy would have gotten any insurance money at all, given that he left the keys in an unlocked running car. I'm not saying this was his fault, but the insurance company would probably try that track to deny his claim.

Horrible that an innocent girl had to be killed in this

Not smart, but I understand the guy who chased the thief. I wouldn't just let someone take my shit. Be it a car, my lawnmower, or even my snow shovel.

Sheesh. You guys would blame a woman who is giving birth for her husband hitting someone on the way to the hospital.

It was an accident. But if you need to blame someone, blame the person who KILLED the girl. Its sickening when people try to blame the good for the actions of the evil.

This is the thief's fault period. I strongly believe that in cases like this the thief should be held culpable for all damages and/or deaths.

It's a sad ending, but how the hell do you blame a guy for following some asshole that just jacked his car

The owner was a douchebag. In America we have insurance that cover these kinda things, and we also have these people called the Police who will attempt to catch car thieves (although not very successful most of the time). This is not GTA, you don't toggle the "vigilante" action button and chase after criminals.

I would not agree with you. If my belonging was getting stolen right infront of me, and I could see the thief and had the means to follow/chase the thief, I would (and almost everyone else) would do the same.

Imagine this scenario: You are sitting in the restaurant (or anyplace else) and you have kept your cell phone (or wallet or anything else) on the table. You turn your back to talk with someone (or just go to the restroom). When you look back (or come back from restroom etc.), you see someone taking your phone or any other belonging. What do you do ? Do you just wait and call the cops or do you go after the person ?

Even if the car is insured, most people dont think "oh its ok, my car is insured and insurance will give me the money...let the thief steal it infront of me".

Yes, I do feel terrible for the girl's family though and it is a sad incident but the owner is not a douchebag in my opinion.
That is where you and many people differ; I know what can happen in a hot headed high speed chase, you could end up in an accident with some innocent victims just as easily as the thief. I have no possessions that are worth risking the lives of innocent people, no matter how mad I was about the theft.

This is a bit different, though. Chasing after a thief on foot isn't nearly as dangerous to other people as chasing a thief in a 3000lb+ vehicle at high speed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming the guy and I'm not going to claim that I wouldn't have done the same thing, because I don't think I can say that with 100% certainty. But in hindsight, I don't know how anybody could claim he did the "right" thing. He let anger cloud his judgment.

Darn straight someone steals my car I'm gonna chase them if I can, during which I'll be on the line with 911 directing the cops to the pursuit. If the police catch him in pursuit, the car thief is more likely to be physically hurt, deservingly so.

Jesus, that wasn't sold an old Accord, either. That was a 2003-2007 model.

I think the Merc must have been on its side as it hit the Accord, because the "cut" on the Accord is so narrow. There's really not much of the Accord missing, it's just sliced in half pretty cleanly. If the Merc was traveling normally, the impact would have been spread out over far more of the Accord's side.

wouldn't "shooting the punk on the scene" also constitute vigilante action?

Liability only insurance DOES NOT covered stolen cars.

is that gonna be the new weak line nowadays?

rip for the victim, but people die everyday, children included.

edit- and i'm not making light of the tradgedy but these threads suck. i see cars torn apart in front of the local FD and it breaks my heart knowing people died.

but go to a childrens burn center, or see some kid crying from seeing his dad die.... it happens...

yes, the thief was responsible for the death; he stole a car, and it's safe to say that the girl would not have died if he hadn't stolen the car to begin with and driven her way.

does the owner bear any responsibility for the girl's death? my personal view is that while he's not criminally liable, he did contribute to the situation *if* he was chasing the car at a high rate of speed and engaging in the same high-speed reckless driving that the thief took. Notice I said contribute, not responsible for. The thief was the one who struck the girl's car, but given the available information the owner chasing him seemed to have been engaging in a high speed chase, while the cops were following but presumably at reduced speed.

I bet the car thief was wishing he was law enforcement right about now.

If a cop runs a red light, hits another car and kills a passenger, they get out of jail free and clear.

Omg... I agree with jpeyton's hidden point here. They should fry both of these drivers. The rookie sirenless cop from the article peyton linked and the thief from the OP link of this thread.

Read the other thread. The woman involved was an idiot, it wasn't the cop's fault.

It's sicking that people will risk other people's lives just to steal property. I don't blame the guy for trying to go after, since he must of been pissed that it happened right in front of his eyes like that and it was his first reaction, but the right thing to do would of been to call the cops and tell them which direction etc... and then hope for the best from that point.

I hope this thief is locked up for good so he can reflect on what he did, and that it costed someone's life.
