It's sickening that jpeyton will use the death of a 10 year old girl to spread his off topic anti-cop bullshit.

Is it OK to break laws while pursuing a thief? (Not that it applies in this instance, I'm just wondering if I can drive recklessly while pursuing someone who stole from me.)

Probably not. You'd get charged then they'd say "you should of called the cops". At least that's my guess.

Though I wonder, in a situation where it's just not possible to call the cops, if they'd let it slide. Ex: a thief has your child hostage with gun to head and will shoot if you get any closer, your only option is to pull your gun as fast as you can and shoot the thief (hopefully with good aim!). Would the law nail you for that? It's a situation like that where I would hope the "murderer" is not actually charged since it was done in defense of someone else (the child).

I bet the car thief was wishing he was law enforcement right about now.

If a cop runs a red light, hits another car and kills a passenger, they get out of jail free and clear.

Omg... I agree with jpeyton's hidden point here. They should fry both of these drivers. The rookie sirenless cop from the article peyton linked and the thief from the OP link of this thread.

Read the other thread. The woman involved was an idiot, it wasn't the cop's fault.

Yes it was.

Wait... so they are charging this guy with murder for stealing a car and killing a kid and almost killing another kid; murder? Did I miss something about malice aforethought, or do the DA's there not know what the definition of murder is? Or is this the cops talking out of their asses as usual (those without the authority to charge anyone with anything)?

Yep, read it. Also now read the article, and know that the murder stuff is only coming from here. Good to see we have the stupidity contained.

I live in New Milford, but on the opposite end near Oradell. I feel so bad for that family.

Maybe you missed this line in the article:

WTF should he be charged with something?

If someone jacks your wallet are you going to say ohh well, he probably needs it more than me or are you going to try and get it back?

Most stolen property is never recovered and yeah his insurance will probably cover it, however he left the keys in it so the insurance company could easily refute the claim.

I wish more people would think of criminals as criminals instead of victims.

I feel sorry for the girl and her family, but who is to say that if the guy hadn't stolen the car he wouldn't have done the same thing?

Fuck the criminals, I wish the first officer on the scene would have made sure that the douchebag didn't clear the car before it went up in flames.

If somebody stole my car and I was right there and saw it, I sure as hell would chase them down. The guy did NOTHING wrong by trying to track/reclaim his property.
The guy that stole it and drove off with it is 100% to blame.

I really like the new felony murder law. If I was the parent, I'd be pissed at the owner of the vehicle but then I'd be pissed at any and everything that my little girl/loved one is gone or got hurt.

I hate how people keep being told to rely on the police for everything. See a crime, call the police and probably never see the criminal behind bars.

I could see giving the guy who was chasing a ticket for reckless driving, but anything above that would be out of line.

Hey geniuses, people don't have comprehensive on 18 year old cars. The guy would have received $0 for his car if he let the thief steal it.

Hard to put out a blanket statement like that. My mom has comp/collision and liability on her '91 BMW.

Well that would be a 17 year old (not 18) car wouldn't it...
Seriously though, the thief needs to burn for this.

RIP for the girl

Many states have laws that if someone dies during the commission of a felony, the person who committed the felony can be charged with murder.

I think my first instinct would be to follow as well, but when the thief started pulling crazy shit, I'd hope that I would come to my senses and back off.

As long as we are blaming the owner of the car for giving chase, perhaps we should also blame the driver of the Honda Accord for not practicing being a "defensive enough" driver.

W124 is a fucking tank. If the guy stole something else he'd probably have died in the accident... I bet he wishes he did now.
