Saw the trailer the other day. Very cool. I am excited about it. I cannot really tell what they are doing though. Did they film it and then paint over each frame?

How do they do that and still make it look good? I mean sure, you see a skin tone and pick a similar color, but in a photo or film there are millions of slight variations that make up shadowing, lighting, color interpretation, etc. That's amazing.

It would have made a great period piece - I think it's a shame it's set in the future, and I'm not thrilled about the animation. OTOH, with Linklater, Downey Jr., Harrelson, and Reeves all signing on, it's pretty likely that it stays true to the book. Hopefully the melodrama of the preview was just to suck the average moviegoer in.

The illustration only reinforces the surreal ideas covered in the film. I think it's almost necessary.

Hmm. I'm not sure that anything in the book would be surreal in the traditional sense of surrealism, as it's all part of the text.

I.E. the dogshit scene. While it challenges reality, it is known to the reader that it is a mental state of the protagonist, and the protagonist himself is aware enough to be concerned about his inability to "see" clearly enough to discern whether he is in fact hallucinating.

Traditional surrealism (bunuel, et al.) is - without trying to cheapen it - a running gag designed to play with the audience - the players themselves rarely, if ever, show that they are aware that their surroundings are anything but normal.

For me, much of the thrill or enjoyment of the novel (or any film) comes from the feel of the cinematography - the texture, if you will. Take, for example, the imagery of the muscle cars in the book. While not the focal point, you can certainly imagine a muscle car with balding tires and a couple dents - a rough spot on the left rear fender starting to rust. Imagine sitting in the passenger seat on a hot day with no A/C, sweating and sticking to the black vinyl as you scrutinize the text "OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR". Your eyes flick past the slightly bent telescoping radio antenna, rove to the dash, which is covered with a thin layer of dust, and end up on the 5 button radio with 8 track. The keys hang from the chrome plated ignition cylinder, and a red light on the instrument panel - barely visible in the sunlight - blinks out some warning or another.

Some cinematographers (and authors, which unfortunately I am not) can describe that scene so vividly that you can smell it. Now imagine the same scene has been covered up with a thick layer of paint.

I'm not saying it won't be good, and I will reserve judgement until I have seen it, but my gut instinct tells me that I will not like the animation. And yes, I do enjoy some anime.

Well, I'm an illustrator and graphic artist... so I guess I'm a bit biased towards stuff like this. Even so, I do not feel that the texture in the cinematography is lost simply because the tones have been - not to make it sound less detailed - vectorized. If anything I think it makes the scene richer with the elements of strokes and motion brought on by the painted structures. Besides, it doesn't really have that 'thick layer of paint' feel that Waking Life had... it's cleaner and the attention to detail is much greater. In any event I do not think this will dissapoint even the more seasoned of movie goers like yourself. By the way I hate anime.

Wow, that trailer wants to make me go pick up the book and read it before the movie is released.

Anyone read the book? How is it?

I was reading a short bio on Philip K. Dick and saw there was this movie coming out that was supposed to follow his book closely. I watched the trailer, it looks awesome. I should pick up the book...

So what's the premise of the movie? Canoe's brain's messed up, and the whole conspiracy thing?

Don't tell me to "go read the book". I'm reading stuff that's actually interesting.

Philip K. Dick is usually interesting. He is the godfather of good/new wave scifi.
