PATNA, India (Reuters) - Hundreds of Indian rail passengers got more than they had bargained for when the driver of their train asked them to get out and push.

It took more than half an hour to move the stalled electric train 12 feet so that it touched live overhead wires and was able to resume its journey, officials said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in the eastern state of Bihar on Tuesday after a passenger pulled the train's emergency chain and it halted in a "neutral zone," a short length of track where there is no power in the overhead wires.

"In so many years of service in the railways, I have never come across such a bizarre incident," said Deepak Kumar Jha, a spokesman for Indian Railways.

A train's momentum usually allows it to continue moving through neutral zones.

India's rail network carries more than 15 million people daily -- more than the combined population of Norway and Sweden -- but its safety record often comes in for criticism.

People are amazing in India - very helpful unlike the lazy capitalistic slobs that live in America. Americans would not bother to push let alone get out of the train because it's hot outside.

Lmao. This is pretty funny. If my train stalled and I had to be somewhere I'd sure get out and help push. I wouldn't think people would be able to push a train though. They are damn heavy. If it was a deserted stretch of tracks though where getting another vehicle out there to tow the train would take a long time, they might not have had a choice.

In America us lazy capitalist slobs pay to make sure the damn trains dont need to be pushed 12 feet by the passengers to continue working.

Good day.

Don't kid yourself... have you seen their disregard in driving for people around them? YOU (pedestrian) have to move out of the way, not them.

I just figured we weren't dumb enough to pull the emergency stop chain for no reason.

In America half the people would help, the other half would sue.

This happened once before when Henry decided to hide under the bridge b/c he didn't want to get his paint wet. Everyone except Sir Topham Hat (who had doctor's orders :| ) had to push!

Didn't they actually brick Henry in like some Edgar Allan Poe story? I think I remember that episode.

edit: reading just the title I knew this was in India.

Yeah, it was a pretty macabre punishment. He stayed in that living tomb for some unspecified amount of time until they needed him to help push Gordon's sorry caboose up a hill...then Henry decided he wanted to be really useful and GTF out of that tunnel.

Ahh....right next to NewHampsizonaia, right?

Seriously.....9 out of 10 Americans are that stupid and then some. Don't get me wrong, I love this country and wouldn't really want to live anywhere else, but if this happened here the passengers wold just sit there and wait for a repair crew to come. I'm not saying Americans would never do what they did, just that we're not likely to because we actually have people in place who take care of that sorta thng quickly.
