I recently had to format my computer and lost all my mp3s except the ones that are left in my Ipod. Now I'm trying to move those songs back to my comp but Itunes tells me I can't. So what program can I use to transfer my music out of my Ipod.

Thanks guys

Well, theoretically you can just use explorer (I'm assuming you're on windows here). The only problem will be that the songs are not coherently organized (to the human eye) and have odd names but any tag manipulating software can reorganize that for you, including iTunes.

There's lots of free iTunes alternatives though, that don't have this artificial limitation so I'm sure someone will be along soon to suggest an easier alternative

We have had quite a few threads askling about software to sync music with an iPod. I never liked the idea and prefer to just copy and paste my music over.
I know for a fact you cant simply copy music TO an ipod and expect it to play. Not sure if copying synced music FROM it will work.

Incidentally the syncronize function in WMP 10 isnt good enough. (Unless I was using it wrong.)

Correct, the music needs to be arranged in a certain way for the iPod to play it.

I don't see why not. I'm pretty sure they're still just mp3 files sitting on a filesystem so all you need to do is copy them off and then rearrange them on your computer as needed. The sticky issue that I forsee is if the iPod is set to be automatically sync'ed with iTunes. Then you plug it in and if you haven't retrieved your songs yet, iTunes will blow everything away because the songs aren't in it's library. It might do it anyway, depending on how the matches are resolved (a hash on the file contents maybe?).
