my dealer can get me a warrantied transmission reman for like $3k whih is maybe 500-1000 more then a independant shop.

I rarely get work done at a dealer due to the high labor and part write up....but Im thinking their warranty would be best.

The closest transmission shop I trust is an hour away and I feel like its a huge pain in the ass to even take my truck there.

Is it crazy to get this done at a dealer or is it a good idea?

First off, you'll be having a dealer trained trans man doing the work.

Second, you'll have a factory-backed transmission, with a warranty good at any dealer.

Will you get that at a trans shop? To me, that's worth a few hundred bucks. If it was a grand, then no.

Also: See if they can do any better on the price. Tell them you'd like to get it done but it's just a bit too much....many times they can at least give you a 10% discount just to get the business. Every little bit helps.

More than likely the tranny reman is coming from the same place in either case, but yes, the dealer has probably a more stringent quality control and inspection process - there's just a higher markup. If you went straight to a tranny company, you could probably get some savings passed on (since there are less subsequent markups) but your warranty may be more restricted.

In May of 2017, my 2008 Yukon Hybrid w/ 100,800 miles started "slipping 3rd-4th gears" (automatic transmission) and the dealership wanted close to $7K to replace it. Insane!!! I sure as shit didn't do it - traded it in at another dealership and bought a new truck!

When the tranny in my 1999 Grand Prix acted up at about 150,000 miles, it had lost the shift into 4th gear (overdrive) due to a problem with the splines on the 4th gear hub. I bought a GM Factory Reman trannyn for about $1,500 at the dealer, had it shipped over to Wayne Transmissions in Wayne, NJ and they did the install. They do exceptional work there. It now has almost 100K miles on it since the rebuilt unit went in.

Typically, I always take my car to the dealer. Once a relationship is formed, you'll rarely pay full price for anything, but still get dealer quality workmanship.

This reminds me of another path: Check and see if the trans shop can install the trans bought at the dealer.
I know with Ford you still get the 3 year, Unlimited Miles warranty on parts AND labor whether the dealer installs it or not.

Don't know about other manufacturers, but that's how Ford does it.

Edit: Saw that it was a Chevy truck. GM was 3 year, 100k miles warranty last I heard. And I think that's good for over-the-counter as well.

Those are easy Trans to find let alone fix. If you have time have a good local shop rebuild plus add a fix kit. The fix kit will make some changes to make it hold up better and last longer.
You can also check out eBay for builders that sell already fixed ones and takes yours as core.

This is a good suggestion. If it were my Truck, I would be shopping for the best long term transmission not warranty. You want this to last not be fixing it again.

Do you know the mechanics at your dealership? How much better warranty is $1000 getting you? I would try a Chevy forum and see what other people have done with the same problem.

I would take to the local transmission shop in town. The guy that runs it rebuilt my wife's old car's transmission for a lot less than anybody else was willing to do it, and the transmission lasted out the rest of the life of the car until all the other problems claimed it a year and a half later.

Take your quotes to the dealer and show them the lower prices you can get elsewhere. If they talk about warranty, explain that those shops stand behind their labor and that the parts are covered....make it a non-issue. Tell them to give you a real reason to go with them.

I personally don't trust dealers or most mechanics....but that's just because I can fix most things on my vehicles using parts sourced from eBay and videos from YouTube....something like a transmission, I'd likely go with a dealership first and a transmission specialist second. Never take it to an independent. I once did this and the car was never right....I had little recourse. Lesson learned.

well i decided to definitely not get a dealer tranny. I want a beefed up transmission and I found a shop that can pull and replace mine for $650. Havent decided yet if Im buying a Monster remanufactured or buying an in-house rebuilt tranny from the shop. This will end up costing me $2500 to get a tougher transmission installed. on the cheap I could go OEM and spend $1750-2000
