My son just bought a new WD 80 G HD and he want to transfer all the data from the old 40G IBM HD, including OS and email to the new HD. How does he do that without loosing his email folders and address? He is presently using Win XP Pro. He is going to give the IBM HD to his brother which will be using WinXP home edition.

Western Digital's Datalifeguard should have an option to let you do that. You should have gotten this on a disk that came with the new HD, or you can download it from WD's web page.

the new drive should have come with a disk (at least the older western digitals did) that you can boot from. there should be an option after you use it to boot that will allow you to copy the contents of the old hd to the new one. this will copy everything.

Just like everyone else.

The WD hard drive should come with a disk.

Now if your son got an OEM disk... you can always goto Western Digital and download the utilities onto a disk.

Most of the time the utilities on their website is already newer then that on the floppy.

maybe take a shot at the "files and settings transfer" wizard in XP Pro? Especially if he is using outlook/ outlook express for EMail. You may even be able to slim down unessessary stuff without losing what you actually wanted. I haven't tried it yet, so I'm taking a shot in the dark here.

*** EDIT: snap. I skipped right over the "transfer OS" part. Latest version of ghost is what I recommend. Everything will be identical, only on new drive. For FAT32. NTFS, I am not 100% positive- thus the latest version part...

Thanks to every body that replied to my question. I tried the utility disk that came with the WD drive but, since the old drive is running WinXP home edition using NTFS files, the utility program do not see it because is looking for FAT32 files. I will try the Norton Ghost program. Thanks to everybody
