All you need is the COA As far as actually moving an OS, I've never seen that successfully done.

The OS that comes with these computers are OEM and tied to the machine. A new laptop would come with Windows 8.1, which can be upgraded to 10 within the first year of its release.

yes sounds like he just wants to get a new hard drive. Windows 7 has a built in Backup and Restore option.

Go to control Panel and then to Backup and Restore.

You will need to Create a system repair disk, and then create a system image.

You will boot up off of the system repair disk to tell it you want to restore from a system image. Read the help topics and it will guide you through what you need to do.

If all you are doing is swapping HDDs, it is doable with a few different methods.

Does the laptop have room for 2 HDDs?

Do you have another PC that you could install both laptop drives in (temporarily) and use a cloning utility to copy?

Do you have an external HDD enclosure or hard drive cradle with USB connectivity, plugging it into the laptop and using a cloning utility to copy?

Since that is a desktop motherboard model number, I presume that you want to transfer the old laptop's OS to the new desktop? According to Microsoft's license for OEM OS software, you can't do that, legally.

However, I would obtain a Win7 ISO corresponding to the edition of the key, install it, and attempt to put in the OEM key off of the COA of the laptop. If it has never been used to activate an OS, then it may work. You may need to do phone activation.

Edit: Cloning the OS would work, if you wanted to replace the old HDD in the laptop with a new one, and put it back into the laptop. However, it will NOT work to transfer an OEM OS install from a branded OEM PC to a custom-built PC. It will un-activate itself, and will not be able to be re-activated, without either re-installing, or putting in a fresh license key.

Edit: If you only want to do this, because you don't want to pay for an OS for your new desktop PC, then consider installing Linux. It's free (both in speech and as in beer), and some "distros" are very much like Windows in everyday usage.
