Transfering data via ethernet

I have 2 computers. Want to transfer data between them. How do I do it with ethernet. It's been years since I did this.

Well, assuming you're using Windows and your Ethernet cards are already configured & operating, and that you're talking about Direct Connect (no router or hub or DHCP-assigning thingy)... Then it's not too hard.

You'll need to configure each of the two machines with a Static IP, in your TCP/IP Settings (Control Panel->Network->TCP/IP Properties). Give one machine 192.168.5.1 and the other 192.168.5.2 . You'll probably have to reboot, and then you should be able to see the two machines in the Network NEighborhood. Just share a folder and away you go.

Oh, and before I forget... to direct connect 2 computers you'll need a crossover cable, not a standard passthrough cable.

The guy I'm trying to help doesn't have a crossover. Can you do this through a router with standard cords?

Plug them into a switch. Pretty much any multiport router has one built in.

does network neighborhood = Network Connections?


Also, if doing it through a router, will those IP's work?

Yup... And if it's really a router, then it'll probably automatically assign you IP's via DHCP, so you won't even have to do that. Should just be plug-n-play at that point.

If you mean a Switch or Hub, tho, then you'll still have to assign IP's manually.

Ok, I changed a folder on my computer to shared. It has that hand under the folder icon. My other laptop can't see it in "my network places", what am I doing wrong?

ok, I turned off the firewall
made the workgroups the same
and enabled sharing so the hand is under a folder

Still, can't see it from the laptop

It could take a few minutes before it appears there (have to wait for the Windows browser to do it's thing). if you don't want to wait, you can just open Explorer and type \\ipaddress or \\computername

I tried that, just sends me to google.

If you open explorer (like My Computer, or even IE) and type in the address bar "\\ipaddress" it takes you to google ? No http or anything.. Just \\ip .

Try using the Start->Run and typing in \\ip there..

ya, it googled the IP. But everything works now.

Just took 30 mins or so.
