I recently switched from iphone 3GS to Lumia 900. So far its working great except i am not sure how to manage my music transition.

I have songs on itunes and since wife is still on iphone, our music future purchases are likely to remain on itunes.

So is there any simple way to move my music from itunes to lumia (current library as well as on a ongoing basis?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure the zune software can read AAC files that itunes songs are formatted in, all you need to do is change the settings so that it's looking in your itunes library folder for music.

Doesn't iTunes just dump everything you download in some program files/itunes/music/artist/album folder or something? I would think you could just either tell your phone to look in that directory or add that location to your 'library' for the phone or whatever software syncs with the phone.

If your musics on your PC just use WMP to sync it over.

And stop buying your music through iTunes.

No, he uses the Zune Software, WMP will not sync with WinPhone7.

And why should they stop buying through iTunes? Amazon's prices are sometimes better, but if his spouse has an iPhone, then any purchase she makes on that can get download automatically onto the PC, monitored by the Zune Software and then wirelessly synced to his phone that night. Assuming that he can fit all the music on there.

OP, install the Zune Software, point it at your iTunes folder, it will add all the files (that are DRM free) and you can go from there.

Really? WP doesn't work with WMP? That's a bit odd, wonder why they did that? (I actually misread the OP and assumed it was an android phone)

I prefer to have my music in a lossless format and then convert it if I need to.

Yea, it is incredibly annoying. The original Zune players were the same way. Instead of integrating them into their existing software, they create the Zune software for syncing, management and the storefront. I suppose adding the Zune Marketplace to WMP would have been an issue, but still, it's annoying.

Where can one buy lossless files online? How are they priced? How difficult is to add them into the Zune software and iTunes?

Apple's odious DRM is the best reason I can think of. Try playing a track bought through the iTunes store on any device other than one made by Apple. Amazon's tracks are DRM free and encoded at a VBR.

I think apple scrapped the DRM ages ago. The bitrate still sucks for archiving your music though.

Apple hasn't had DRM for years, and they have a much bigger & better selection of music. Also a good number of albums on iTunes will be special versions with songs you can't legally get anywhere else. Plus sometimes you get digital booklets and video's included, which are both bonuses. Only time I'd use Amazon over iTunes is when an album's on sale. You will find some good new albums for $5 from time to time on Amazon which is sweet. I have about 400 songs I've bought off iTunes, and every one I've put on my Android phone has played fine.

Apple dropped the DRM years ago so anything you buy through the iTunes store will play on anything with AAC support.

Also, the AAC format is generally considered superior to MP3 for files at the same bitrate, but as both stores sell music encoded at 256 kbps it's unlikely that most people could tell the difference.

Amazon does not sell 256 kbps mp3 files they sell -V0 LAME VBR files.

Also, get a zune pass subscription, and download whatever music you want from the marketplace at will.

Because they setup Zune/Zune Software/WP7 to use an encrypted MTP instead of regular MTP that WMP supports.

I like HD tracks, e classical, and 2L for lossless (flac).just about every day e classical offers a 24/96 flac for the price of the mp3 version. I transfer them to my Android using media monkey.not sure if that works with windows phone.

Generally I order CDs, they post them to me and then I rip them.

I do that for albums I know I'll love and listen to a hundred times (literally), but when I just want a track or two, I just buy it on iTunes. The DRM is gone now, and I play the stuff on Windows Media Player.

Quality is definitely subpar compared to my variable bit rate rips using WMP. Ya, not "audiophile" quality, but good enough for me.

iTunes store is like going to Wal-Mart... Everything's there including music videos, movies, obscure albums. Quality isn't spectacular, but it works.

My issue with itunes lies in the logevity. If aac is usurped by another audio format I've got now worthless files. It's a longshot but one I'm not willing to risk. I try to buy lossless whenever possible or sample off youtube before buying a cd.

All of the music I buy from iTunes are in ".m4a" format and Windows Media Players plays them, which is a huge plus because I hate playing stuff with iTunes.

I'd highly advise Zune Pass as well. It's well integrated into WP7 (as you'd expect). It works better than Spotify - though if wife has iPhone and you want to share an account you may have to use Spotify.

I understand why but a lot of people equate the A in AAC with Apple. It's a wide-ranging, cross-manufacturer standard which has more legs than MP3 right now.

Still what I do is buy stuff I want to keep on CD and rip lossless - after that I can recompress to whatever lossy format I want. For everything else, there's Spotify / Zune Pass.
