Hello,

Right now I have a Abit IC7-MAX3 set up which has an on-board RAID controller. I have set up two 320gig wd sata on raid 0. Im upgrading to a nvidia 680i mobo, e6600, etc. How should I go about transfering the raid set up? Must I have to rebuild the raid or is there a easier way so i don't have to back up my 500 gigs worth of data.

Thanks!

You have to back up your data to a single drive and then rebuild the entire raid again. This is one disadvantage of mobo built in RAID. But if you had add-in RAID card, your raid configuration requires no rebuilding. You will still need to do a Window XP Repair Installation (or use Sysprep) though when you upgrade the mobo.

I have heard of people completely transfering threr raid0 without having to doi anymore than transfer the darddrives to the new set up!

But in order to do that you need to be using the exact brand and version of raid controller...

I could be wrong...

If you have 500GB on a RAID0 array with no backup capability, then your data must not be very important to you. If it is important, you should be able to put together a 1TByte USB, FireWire, or SATA external hard drive for around $400-$430 by the end of March. Right now, Newegg has pre-built 750GB external drives for about $350. With either drive size, safely moving your data to a new PC becomes trivial.

Copying 500GB across a SATA interface shouldn't take more than a couple of hours if you do a file-by-file copy.

I have tried this many times and i will tell you this.

Hard drives "remember" that they are tied in raio0 array, but only if you are using the SAME BRAND raid controller.

If you are changing the RAID controller, the array will break and you will lose the data.

If you have another drive which is bootable, you can start windows and install certain software for rebuilding RAID0 arrays. But don't count on this because the risk is it will not work entirely or will corrupt data.

You should have think about this when thought about using RAID0 and not having backup data drive...

Hm.... this is nightmare for you indeed...

Yeah its gonna be a pain in the @$$, but looks like Im just going to be transfering the files on to 2 seperate hd, a 300 and a 250 gig via usb. The data is not life-threating important, pretty much just vidoes and music but ts pretty risky with my current setup so i think im going with a raid 5 set up with the 680i board.

Thanks
