Transferring files from one computer to another

I would like to know how to transfer programs/files from my old computer to a new one?

I've not used it - but this program is getting some good reviews, and is on sale currently at Office Depot for one.

Ghost is the classic program from symantec, but frankly this task has been around a LONG time, and if you want to do a total transfer (no smarts required) the software free for download from most drive vendor sites will be fine.

Free.
Ghost, which does nicely over networks etc.
Expensive fancy software to make you feel warm and fuzzy.

Do keep in mind that just because you moved something to the new computer, does NOT mean it will work, or won't require a upgrade or reinstall, depending on how much has changed.

Hi, I assume you are really asking about the connections as well as the programs. There are many possiblities and some came with Windoze. 1. Use DIRECT CONNECT and a NULL MODEM cable and the Serial ports. 1. Direct Connect and either of two types of Parallel Cables. 3. Find a program to use the USB ports and a suitable cable. 4. Connect using a crossed Net cable and Net cards in each machine or same with 2 straight cables and a router. 5. Burn the data to a CD. 6. Put the data on a flash drive or an external Hard Drive. 7. Move one drive to the other machine as a slave. There are probably many other possibilities. Hope this helps a bit, Jim

There are literally too many ways to mention. You might want to be a little more specific on what it is you want to do and what you're willing to do to get a more accurate response.

Something like Ghost is great if you want to backup the entire contents of one drive to a new drive, while something as simple as a network connection is fine for just swapping a few files around (you were about as vague as can be in your question).

Putting both hard drives in the same computer is also an option, it all really depends on just how much you want to move and what you're willing to do... there are so many options, you should be more specific in your request to get an accurate answer!

Making a wild guess that you are not a real saavy computer user, and just want to start working on your new PC. Windows has a migration tool that collects data off the old system, like preferences, email settings, etc. and moves them to the new machine, but doesn't do much for any non MS applications.

If you are in that grey area between moving just the settings, and transfering the whole drive contents, you will need either a nerd to help you, or some software with more than basic transfering smarts. Something I am guessing like the Migrate somebody else mentioned.
