I am trying to transfer most of my old data on my 2k machine to my new xp machine. On the xp box I have firewire, usb 2.0 and a LAN connection (RJ 45), while on my old win 2k box I have usb 2.0, and RJ 45 and a firewire port through my audigy 2 soundcard. I hook them up through firewire and xp is fine, but 2k has to look for drivers which It cannot find for the 1394 port on the audigy. I also tried hooking them directly to eachother using the RJ45 connection, but I cant get file trandfer to work. Someone please help me.

If you hook them up together over RJ45, you'd need a crossover cable (think of it as specially designed for a direct connect between two computers). It's different than the kind you use to hook a computer to a switch or router. You should be able to pick one up at BestBuy/CompUSA; or any local computer store. Give them both IP addresses (like 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2) and then the computers should see each other, and you can transfer away!

as Sideswipe said if you do it over lan, you need a cross over cable(about 6 dollars) or a lan hub(15?), router. If you do it over usb you need a usb trasfer cable, which is about 50 bucks. I don't know about firewire.

Or you can go old school and do it over one of your com ports.

If you're just trying to move a lot of files, not settings (like with the FAST wizard), and your old HD is compatible with your new system, you could just install the old HD as a slave and move everything over.

Otherwise, the crossover cable's a good investment - they come in handy.

thank you all. I had the crossover cable, but as things turned out, I forgot to disable Norton on both systems. Once I did that, things went fine and now I'm up and running
