I've had a pair of Contigo travel coffee mugs almost 10 years but both of them leak now, unusable. These hold 14+ ounces of hot coffee. I think maybe replacement lids are available, I'd have to get the matching lids or I have to throw these away. Evidently Contigo is going out of business shortly.

What travel coffee mug(s) do you favor?

I used to use Contigo mugs for coffee on the go. Had several until I lost the tops. I switched to Yeti after I got one for free. I have been satisfied thus far. The tops of the Yeti have a plunger-like rubber seal that is not as strong as the screw type seal of Contigo, but you probably don't need that unless you really abuse your tumbler. I can turn my Yeti upside down and it doesn't leak save for a bit through the mouth hole.

Yeti coffee mug - doesn't really fit in a cup holder, but keeps shit HOT.
The 10 oz rambler fits a cup holder fine. I think most cars will also fit the 16 oz pint and maybe the 20 oz rambler.

I haven't shopped for one in awhile but what I suggest is stainless steel with zero plastic in-contact with contents and as few gaps/cracks in the lid for gross stuff to get into as possible.

"Simple" is your friend.... stay away from fancy seals, valves and stuff with lots of small threads which are a PITA to impossible to clean properly.

I have two 14 ounce Yeti coffee mugs, have one right beside me now. I think I found out about them here ~3 years ago. But they aren't travel mugs, I can't throw one full of hot coffee in my backpack and ride off on my bicycle. The Contigo served that need, but both of the 2-pack have now gone bad. I tried cleaning the lids with a tooth brush and running water, but they still spurt when filled with hot coffee, even when locked.

This is what I have, in the chartreuse. Easier to spot in that color than others, I sometimes put one down and forget where.

OK, I guess you guys are talking about a different kind of Yeti than mine. They have actual travel mugs that won't leak?

Zojirushi makes a great rice-cooker!

I suggest you go to a store and look at them before buying .... the inside of the lid and the seal-area around it is where they get icky IME.

It just really depends on how aggressive you are with your container. If you are mountain biking or roller skating with it I wouldn't recommend a yeti. If you are just using it while driving around, on the bus, or going for a walk, it is a good option.

Currently using one I got from the thriftshop. It's stainless, and I think it was advertising Vitamix. In the past, I usually used something I found on the side of the road. I have a Contigo I got from meh.com. I got one for my daughter, and threw one in for me since I was already paying shipping. I don't care for it. I don't like air/liquid tight seals. Keeps stuff hot too long, and they're hard to test drink without burning your lips, or screwing up the quantity.

My quantity is pretty standard because of my stovetop coffee maker, with which I make a single pretty standard size brew of 11-11.5oz. My Contigo's would cool steadily and predictably and I never had a problem burning my lips, tongue, etc. They aren't terrific in terms of the ergonomics of drinking, but if you just want a sip now and then they are acceptable. The Zojirushi's I have no idea about but some people are saying in reviews that they are so intensely thermally insulated that burning yourself is a serious issue. However, I do add refrigerator cold milk to my coffee, so the initial temperature will be way lower than for a lot of people, mitigating that problem. Plus, if there's a worry, I suppose I can unscrew the top for a couple minutes and lower the temp 10-15 degrees.

There might be better option for me than a Zojirushi, though.

I used to use a Thermos brand one back when I commuted on a regular basis.
Havent needed to use one very often in recent years though, so I know nothing of the current market or brand offerings.

Assuming this is for storing hot coffee, being icky isn't actually a harmful thing. You might not like it, but it is essentially being sterilized repeatedly each time it is filled with hot coffee.

I don't wash my coffee cup aside from some hot water on the lid every month or two, but I only drink it black with no sugar. and it doesn't sit empty for more than a few hours. Cream+sugar+time would give different results.

While it may not do any actual harm, petrified coffee/milk/sugar residue is disgusting nevermind what can build up if you use the thing for soup or something similar.

I want nothing to do with any vacuum bottle/cup that I can't clean thoroughly AND easily with a kitchen brush and hot soapy water. (worst-case a bottle-brush)

I used to drink mine black, no sugar, but for last decade or more I add around 1.5 oz nonfat milk to my ~11 oz coffee... no sugar. It tastes sweet nonetheless, I figure it's the lactose?

Hmm. For me I suppose that would mean going back to my Thermos pint bottles with the glass inserts that always break if you happen to bang the bottle or drop it. BTDT several times. I have 2 of them, IIRC still. I mean, what travel coffee container can you get now that's that cleanable, keeps coffee hot, doesn't leak no matter what and won't break if you drop it? My Contigos were just OK, but got kind of nasty crudded up in the lid. I rinsed the lids, occasionally went over after use with a toothbrush and soap, but you can't get them really clean. Still they worked until they didn't, cracks developed in the lid mechanism/structure, but more the problem, the real problem was that they would no longer NOT leak. Last couple time I used my Contigo I put it in a plastic bag because I knew (figured) it would leak.

Nearly any strong stainless steel vacuum-bottle with a high-quality one piece lid, large threads and a removeable/replaceable seal would be ideal.

If you plan on cleaning it with a regular brush it will need to have a wide mouth but you can get a special bottle-brush at the grocery store/on Amazon for a few dollars to clean inside smaller/narrower ones.

But in my case I add 1.5-2 ounces refrigerator temperature nonfat milk before pouring in the hot coffee. I'm not worried about sterilizing it. Maybe I should be but I don't recall getting sick from eating anything since I was 14, and that may not have been food poisoning, the evidence speaks against that.

But to drink the contents you will need to what? Pour it into a container?

I have a couple of RTIC travel mugs and they're awesome, though I haven't used them in a while. Keeps hot stuff really hot, and cheaper than Yeti.

My wife has one of those Zojirushi vaccum insulated bottles (I still don't call them mugs!) to keep her tea hot when we travel. I have a Yeti mug that has been serving me well.
