Travel to Egypt?

My friend and I booked a trip to Egypt + Dubai back in early January. With the current situation in Egypt stabilizing do you guys have any feedback on whether its a good idea to go? particularly hopping to get feedback from someone that is actually aware of what its actually like over there. It does not look like our airline will let us change our plans without heavy fines.

What does the state department say about travel to Egypt at this time?

I wouldn't travel to Egypt until they form some sort of government. The rule of law isn't fully restored yet. This is why you should always buy trip cancellation insurance. Though in situations like this, it's douchy for them to charge you.

There were Molotov Cocktails being flung in the streets in riots less than 2 weeks ago. I'd wait for a year of stability before going back, not a couple weeks.

Agreed that it is pretty unreasonable of an airline to not be accommodating in this scenario. Heck, the State Department still heavily advises against traveling there. Maybe that can be leverage to get a refund with less of a hassle?

we are traveling 3/20. the airline is only canceling or forgiving flights for the month of February.

What part of Egypt are you going to, Cairo? I've been over there for work and one of my co-workers just moved back to the States here in Jan. after being over there for a year and a half. He said he is very glad he isnt over there right now.

FWIW, while there are still some questions about the long-term stability of the government, the ruling council of the Egyptian armed forces seems to be firmly in control for the nonce.
I saw a report last night on Egyptian people traveling to the pyramids to try to assure tourists that they will be safe. Tourism is a big part of their economy and you might be made even more welcome as one of the few willing to travel there.

Of course, all hell could break loose in Egypt next month. Then again, a plane could crash into your house tomorrow, your next door neighbor could go postal, the New Madrid fault could let go and devastate the eastern half of the U.S., the Yellowstone Caldera could erupt...

that is what im thinking, our hotel is only 10 miles from the airport. we are spending 4 nights there.

Let's see.... this week the military beat the hell out of protesters with clubs, then apologized on TV. Sounds like it's stable now. Going now is probably a fantastic idea. Wear a Mubarak T shirt when you visit Tahrir. Oh, and ride a camel through the square.

insurance does not cover "civil unrest" neither does the credit card I used. they Do cover terrorism and if a flight is delayed by more then 6 hours. As well as any medical issues.

I would love to go to Egypt right now. You get to see a society that is currently undergoing a revolution, but has experienced very little violence or chaos. The protesters cleaned up after themselves and even protected their museums from Mubarak's thugs.

People talk about the Laura Logan incident, but she was actually saved by bystanders. Women are sexually assaulted in public without help from bystanders in Western countries all the time.
