Traveling international without a passport.

my passport is in the process of renewing, therefore, i don't have it with me. can i still travel out of the country without it? is there a temporary passport i can apply for or something to prove that i'm a US citizen? i'm traveling to canada by car.

But just makesure to tell themyou're visitingas a TOURIST.

For example, US citizens visiting Mexico as tourists don't need to show a passport.
BUT if visiting MExico for business purposes then we do need to show a passport.

This is all about to change very soon, and you WILL have to have a passport to go pretty much anywhere outside of US territory. I believe 2007 is when it all changes.

I'm suprised Social Security Card+Driver's License isn't accepted as documentation, because its good enough for the employers to verify that you are a US Citizen (I-9 form?)

That's to prove your eligibility to work and NOT to prove that you are a citizen. However, when providing verification for eligibility, a US citizen can provide a passport and nothing else.
