Visa <> Passport

Visas are generally given (and attached) to your passport if you plan on staying in a country for an extended period of time. Passports are required to enter most countries unless there is some type of reciprocal agreeement between countries, for example travel between EU member states as an EU citizen.

No choice, you'll need a passport to enter Spain as a US citizen.

If you are a US citizen, you need a passport. If your stay is longer than 3 mths, you need a visa. A US carrier is not allowed to even board you without a passport. You can get one in less than a week, but it will cost you. If you are a minor up to age 18, you must have a passport or National ID card and an exit form from the US possibly certified by a legal guardian. No vaccinations required.

Also note that the source I am checking is not the official source (Dept of State and Spainish Embassy are the official sources). It also adds the requirement for a return ticket and visible means of supporting yourself while on the visit. The fine for not compiling on arrival appears to be between 6000 and 60240 Eurs. Get a passport!

I just had to do a renewal and I had it expedited. It took 7 days.

it took about 1 week to get my Visa for Spain
