Traveling With Photography Equipment?

I'm going on an international work assignment for 5 months and I plan on bringing my camera stuff with me. Sadly, carry-on is not an option. Should I check my stuff? Even in a pelican-style case? Shipping via USPS is also a not terribly expensive option (about $300 vs. the $1000+ for UPS/fedex).

Also, are there good places to buy insurance from? I'm not so worried about my stuff being stolen or damaged while on my trip - I'm far more terrified of potential damage in transit.

If your camera uses lithium batteries, carry-on may be your only option. Airlines strictly limit (prohibit?) lithium batteries in checked baggage. If you can't carry it on, you may have to buy replacement batteries at your destination. If you have a bunch of camera stuff plus laptop with lithium batteries, check with the airline for watt-hour limits. I know I got close on one trip.

I've stored my less expensive lens in the checked luggage inside a protective case and surrounded by clothes without any issues. Although it isn't permitted, small batteries with the contacts protected by a case have gotten through for me everytime.
