Most German cities are fairly small by American standards both in area and inhabitants, so it is definately feasable to explore them by bike.
Usually you can rent city bikes from Deutsche Bahn (DB, German railroad) I guess right at the railway station. The bikes have instruction on how to rent them. You have to call some number for the unlock code and then you can go.....

Places:

Italy is a must, particularly the smaller towns. I spent three days about 40 miles north of Turin in a town of less than 900 people set in the foot of the Alps. It was the most beautiful and best three days of my summer.

Visit Berlin. Forget Frankfurt. Berlin is a cultural mecca. It has beautiful architecture, a wonderful cafe life, and great night life. If you're in Berlin you can also visit Potsdam, which is the location of the Prussian Imperial palaces. Not nearly as gaudy as Versailles, they are still amazingly beautiful.

Other locations you should strong consider: Warsaw, Cracow, Prague, Normandy (only if you can rent a car).

Aside from that, I would recommend NOT trying to be in too many places. I hate when people say "oh, I've done Madrid" or "I've done Paris". You haven't. If you haven't spent at least a few days in a city, you've only had a taste of what it offers. The longer you spend, the more you discover. Therefore, don't be overambitious in setting an itinerary. When I traveled in Europe after my studying there, I spent a week in Paris and I wished I had more time.

As for travel, buy a rail pass. I would recommend trying to plan out as much as you can in advance. That way you don't need to worry about full trains, which happens more often than you would think.

Buy a backpack. Don't mess around with suitcases. I found my bag for $80 at REI and it saved me a lot of stress and trouble. Also, don't over-pack. That means don't bring a laptop, don't bring ten t-shirts, three pairs of pants, three pairs of shorts, and five pairs of shoes. You'll regret it. You want to bring as little as possible. Along the way I promise you will end up buying a shirt or two.

UPDATE: Doing Frankfurt this weekend (visiting a friend who lives there so I'm going to Frankfurt for sure). I need to figure out where to go from Frankfurt on sunday...

I've realized that I'm not really into sight seeing. Well I always knew it, but thought I could force myself to give it a shot. I definitely don't like it. I've decided I just want to relax and hang out, true vacation style. The only sightseeing I would be willing to do is seeing ancient ruins -- Greek and Roman stuff has always interested me.

At this point, i want places to go with warm and sunny beaches. Mediterranean seems ideal. Still would liked to go to La Palma (meets my two interests of a clear night sky where one can see thousands of stars and features of the milky way, as well as beach + warm sunny weather), but the flights are more expensive than I thought they would be. And not sure how stable the weather is there after reading about it online.

What recommendations havst thee, ATOT?

I'm thinking Santorini, plus one or two more secluded beaches in Kefalonia.

Also, let me take this opportunity to say that i used to think traveling from place to place in Europe would be cheap and easy. Not so. Sites like Ryanair, and easyjet only have set locations, for example you can't fly from paris to Frankfurt, even though the airport at Frankfurt is one of the largest in Europe. The prices aren't that low, unless you're using one of select routes on those sites. Trains are also waay more expensive than I thought they'd be. Not a huge deal as I expected to spend a lot of money while here. Those sites are also annoying because they won't plan flights with stops for you, if there are no direct flights. It's ridiculous that I can fly from London to Alghera (island off Italy's mainland) for 10 euro, but flights from London to Paris cost bank.

My favorite cities were Prague, Munich, Brussels and Vienna when I went.

Edit: I also really liked Budapest.

Update: I'm in Athens now, stopped by for a day on my way to the island of Kefalonia. Here's a sweet pic I took of the Acropolis at night, from the top of my hotel.

Most people have covered what you need to know here already. I went to Europe for two weeks once (Germany and Italy) and I had a great time. The only thing that I wish I would have done differently is to not jam pack my schedule with so many cities to visit. I saw 8 cities total. I still had a great time and I was happy that I saw all of the things that I saw, but the trip sort of felt rushed because I tried to see so much in so many different cities.

Other than that, be careful to avoid the pick pockets. Your wallet should never be in any pants pocket. Put it either in the inside of your coat or get a chain wallet because they are good. Avoid all children that have any interest in you. They are all pick pockets. If you go to Rome, the guys dressed up as Caesar and Gladiators outside of the Colosseum that take pictures with you are really pick pockets in disguise and they take your wallet while posing with you for pictures.

***Edit***

I just realized how old this thread is. Still good advise though.

Enjoy Kefalonia! That's where my family is from. You won't have any trouble finding beautiful beaches on the island; they're everywhere.

It is really, really nice. I took a lot of pictures and I'll link you guys when I have them uploaded. Small town I'm staying in, the hotel doesn't have internet in the rooms, and whenever I try to use the public internet terminal in the lobby the power goes out for the the whole building. I'm at an internet cafe right now (surprised they have one here actually), but didn't bring my camera.

I rented a bike and rode to Antisamos beach, and visited ruins of an ancient castle, and also an ancient temple. There are tons of wild goats everywhere, and I had a weird run in with them.

One of them confronted me when I was trying to go to this one ancient tower, and he wouldn't let me pass. It was weird, I encountered him in what I now refer to as "Ciudad de los Cabras" (City of Goats). There was this tower as I said before, which I saw as I was riding down the road, so I turned onto the dirt trail and I see a relatively modern (19th century) building, and also a lot of these cage things made of chicken fence and crude branches and logs. And I saw two goats, and there were these ancient looking stone walls forming terraces up the hill where all this stuff was, with a trail going up the terraces. So it looked like someone or some people could live there but there were no signs of inhabitants, and there was also trash all around the place. I get really close and start going up the path to get to the ancient tower, and I slip on the loose dirt because of the steepness of the hill and almost fall down. And when the sound of me sliding down the mountain happened, out of nowhere about thirty-six goats who I didn't even know were there popped out from bushes and behind rocks and trash from all around me and then it got really weird.

Some of them had sharp horns, and I was only wearing shorts and sneakers, and carrying my camera since I had just gotten back from the beach. All my shit was at the motorcycle. When you're shirtless and wearing shorts you feel pretty naked in the face of sharp antler attacks. So it was really weird because they were all looking at me, and it was dead silent and there were no other humans within a couple kilometers. I didn't know what their intentions were. I was kind of freaked out.

After a while they kind of dispersed a little... they were scattered all around me and they were bleatting and grazing so I thought it was safe to continue. Every time I tried to go up the path this one white goat (with horns of at least 8 inches a piece), who I think was their leader, would walk to the center of the trail and face me, blocking my path. So I did my Steve Irwin thing, and just rushed him and really quickly grabbed one horn with my left hand so I could control his horns, and then got him in a headlock with my other arm and brought him to the the ground. I put him on his back and prevented him from getting up to show that I was the dominant one. Okay, just kidding about grabbing the goat. What I really did was slowly back away. Every time I made a sound many of the goats would look up at me. I have many pictures of the goats, that was a very interesting area of the island...creepy guardian goats of the Roman tower.

Any recommendations on what I should do while I'm here? I visited Antisamos beach, and stopped by the castle ruins and the temple at the hill before you get to Antisamos.

I'm considering going to Ithaca, or riding to Argostoli. A long ride through the mountain road sounds like fun, but my arms are already sunburnt today from riding around.

When I think of the Ionian islands I think of a mix between northern Greece and southern Italy. If you see examples of Italian architecture in Greece, I would love to see pics.

Frankfurt is a waste of time. I did 6 weeks in Europe, got back last week.

I went to everywhere on your list except Prague. Nice is just a bad beach, Paris is much better. Frankfurt has nothing. Munich is awesome with its beer gardens. Barcelona is pretty cool, be careful of pickpockets.
