My knowledge of networking is.. lacking. Could I plug my 10/100 broadband router into one of these to provide internet connectivity and DHCP, and have two machines connected to the gigabit switch sharing files at 1000 MBit (between each other, not the internet, obviously)?
I'm thinking this would be good for my HTPC since I offload transcoding to a different machine, but only if I could realize the speeds on the internal LAN with the router connected.

yes the pc's connected to the gigabit switch will transfer files at max. 1000 mbit, but the internet will not be any faster. Plus, unless you routinely transfer LARGE files between the pc's, you are unlikely to notice a significance difference compared to using a 10/100 switch.
