Thank you! Crazy deal, how is the range on these guys? Since it's not an Atheros chipset with a locked transmit power, can that be adjusted in DD?

Many people claim there high speed or 867 Mbps AC suks.
Most claim it is usable when centered correctly.

Will this work any better than the Rosewill RNX N150RT that I'm using as a bridge between my phone and wired network for intenet?

I was trying a few options for my Android TV box and bought the ZyZTEL 1000bps powerline adaptors...needless to say that they never worked so they are now being sold. I bought the NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router (R7000) and hopefully this will resolve my wireless issues. I can honestly say I hate wireless.

Nice! This is a hell of a deal for a gigabit switch that happens to do routing with an 800MHz chip, however its range does indeed suck and even with the latest build of DD-WRT, it is stuck on auto channel selection which is always a bad idea as it cuts connections as it changes channels (dumbest option in the history of wi-fi).

The upside is that at least two issues can be fixed, this thing is great for modders!

I got two of these last time and there's got to be something just broken in dd-wrt on the 2.4GHz band the N throughput so bad. 5Ghz seems fine, I'd only recommend if you're looking to add 5GHz AC to an existing router.

r27506 is what I've been using since I got it and the channel select reverts to auto when clicking apply or save. Auto channel select is the bane of Wi-fi; it's why neighbors' routers hop to my channel and why they choose the worst channels. This is the biggest complaint I have because I don't expect super long range but the auto select is bothering the heck out of me. I can't be arsed to try older builds and I try to never run stock firmware so I'm just messing with it. Throughput is terribad outside of the immediate room (which is par for wireless routers). It was destined to be a backup anyway.

I don't consider DDWRT worth the effort. Far too unstable, requiring reboots on a weekly basis...TomotaUSB is where it's at for a normal lifestyle

so I will be waiting to move to AC routers until I can find a good deal on one supported by TomatoUSB.

according to the opinionated but trustingly informed fat BestBuy guy in the department he said right now basically everything is crap excepting the Asus models.

Until we get TomatoUSB on more of these, I'm basically 100% confident he's right.

I never seem to have to reboot my dd-wrt routers.

Did you miss the $114.99 Netgear R7000 refurb routers? They take Tomato.

hoping for more like 29.99...our N is sufficient.

You want good, or you want cheap?

Cheap, Tomato (shibby), and AC1200 is achievable. Get one of these AC1200 routers in this thread, apply DD-WRT, and disable the 2.4Ghz radio, and use it as an AC1200 AP, slaved to an Asus RT12/D1, flashed with Tomato to handle the routing and 2.4Ghz wireless. Should cost $40 new total for both, on sale.

Not a bad idea, but you would want both the primary router and the 802.11ac AP to have Gigabit Ethernet ports for the uplink between the two pieces of equipment (the Asus RT12/D1 is 10/100Mbps Ethernet only). Otherwise, you are going to choke data transfers between your 802.11ac wireless clients and the rest of your network. You could move wired devices to the Gigabit ports on the AP, but you would then limit data transfers between your 802.11n wireless clients and the rest of your network to 100Mbps.

yes

plus, the extra hop on the network. wouldn't notice it on throughput, but would slow down DNS lookups etc

That's only an issue if your ISP connection is faster than 90Mbit/sec or so. Otherwise, it works fine. Good luck getting much more than 100Mbit/sec real throughput over 2.4Ghz N anyways.

One other thing about these routers, it may be worth taking apart to reseat the heastsink in there. One I got was OK, but the other was hitting almost 100C from heatsink having shifted out from the retaining screws. It may just take some repositioning, or it may take removing the heatsink entirely to clean the adhesive underneath and add thermal paste to get a decent temp. There are screws under two of the feet on the bottom, then the shell pries apart with some effort.
