If the first thing that comes to the man's mind is how much better off America would be with President Thurmond, there must be SOMETHING redeeming about candidate Thurmond's platform, Thurmond the man from 1948, or Lott is habitually FOS.

In 1980 Lott was in the House so it probably wasn't Senatorial courtesy. In 1997, it was an off camera comment. Lott was not even the focus just conversing with someone nearby.

Imagine . . .
Lott was a great friend to the minorities in Mississippi who voted for him (all three) and minorities in America at-large.
Lott has a voting record that would make Hilary look reasonable.
Let's give Lott a record of publicly condemning segregation and racism from Mississippi's past and vestiges in the present.
Let's give Lott a record of finding more than one black qualified to work in his mailroom.
Lott goes just once on the Freedom Walk (bipartisan group retracing the Selma to Montgomery walk in 1965 CNN when AL state troopers and local deputies clubbed peaceful activists.
Lott publicly condemns attempts to suppress voter turnout in minority districts.
Lott publicly condemns groups like the CCC b/c even comparable politics does not excuse their racist ideology.

Imagine all of those characteristics wrapped into a Jackson County man with the 50s coif and existed before last week. Now superimpose his comments in 2000, 1997, and 1980. Well he probably wouldn't have said it but even if he did; anyone that questioned his committment to equality is either a blooming idiot, a liberal political hack, or both.
