I read long back in a review that skiing was not exactly like Tribes 2, it was slower. In T2 you could reach terminal speeds... who is it? is it fast enough?

What are classes? never heard of "class" before? Is it what zokudu talks above? Pathfinder and Brute? What are their purpose.

I was about to buy in this weekend but got caught up in chores... Next weekend I should be in!

There was a speed cap that was applied initially when closed beta began. That has since been removed and good pathfinders can reach 250-300 KM/h on a good route: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=0BBmFo6lhdQ#t=92s

Classes are Hi-Rez' f2p model basically. Rather than combining different weapons and perks to create your loadout you can use a bunch of predefined loadouts that are referred to as classes. As an example Pathfinder is a light armor class that uses a Spinfusor and a shotgun as well as an Impact Nitron grenade.

You begin the game with access to two classes Soldier and Ranger anmd can purchase any of the other classes with Tribes Gold that you have to pay real life money for.

So without Gold/Money you don't get things like Tribes 2 equivalent to Juggernaut armor or mortar gun? In Tribes 2 I remember there were 3 armors that you could choose from and a set of weapon and packages that were available to everyone and some that were specific to that armor, so here I believe some of that stuff will be locked out unless you pay?

I would love to get into that inventory station and get whatever the heck I want..

Well you earn tokens as you play the game and you can use these token to unlock the additional classes. You don't unlock armors or weapons you unlock the whole loadout together so there is a juggernaut class with the mortar gun with heavy armor. There are two customizable "perks" you gain from capping out classes. Like decreased damage from your own spinfusor and such so theres a bit of customization but its not really on the level of tribes 2.

I also have some beta keys available if anyone wants one toss me a pm.

Do you have to be new user? I logged in and clicked on link and it just shows me how to download the client, but no keys. :/

not sure, i just signed up for a free account, clicked on the beta games tab and clicked on tribes ascend. They listed a beta key and emailed it to me.

You could just sign up for a new account using a 10minutemail account or something.

It's possible they're out of keys though?

Server downtime: The Tribes Servers are expected to be down on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2011 from ~9:30 AM to 2:00 PM US Eastern (14:30 to 19:00 GMT) while the patch is deployed.
Major Highlights since Version 0.1.523
  • New CTF Map added to Free Servers rotation: Bella Omega. (Note that Dry Dock will be temporarily removed from the CTF rotation).
  • Several optimizations and fixes meant to help reduce system crashes, minimize “disconnects”, and improve overall performance. Further optimization is planned for future patches. Please report any issues you continue to have.
  • You can now test all classes (even those classes you do not yet own) in the single-player “Roaming Maps” on the Training menu.
  • The XP Summary screen at end of mission has been reworked to present information in a more useful way.
  • The Top Bar menu has undergone some changes. Further visual improvements are planned for an upcoming patch.
  • Added a new perk for Juggernaut. Super Heavy reduces knock-back effects from AOE blasts.
  • The separate VIP Queue has been removed. VIPs will continue to earn 50% bonus Tokens and XP by playing on the Free Servers. In a future patch, VIPs will also be able to vote on which map should be played next (between match rotations).
  • Major change to the way first person weapon textures are setup to save large amounts of memory. In this build you will see a quality loss and possibly strange behavior on your in hand weapons. This will be addressed in a future patch to bring these weapons back up to high quality.
  • Players who rejoin a match they have left or were disconnected from will have their kills, score, unspent credits, etc. all returned.
Additional Items
  • A variety of audio-related cleanups, optimizations, and fixes.
  • Variety of fixes and improvements to the Settings menu (more is planned).
  • Players can now bind separate keys for their primary and secondary weapons (versus only using the switch weapons key).
  • Decreased the cost on all vehicles (Shrike, Grav Cycle, Beowulf).
  • Increased jetpack initial acceleration.
  • Increased air control slightly across all armor types.
  • Various cleanups to the 3D model display on the class screen, eliminating some crash scenarios and visual anomalies.
  • End of Game results in a “Your Team Won/Loss” result instead of only announcing Diamond Sword or Blood Eagle as the winner.
  • End of Match Summary buttons have been moved into the Top Bar and the Last Match’s Summary Screens are always accessible after the match has ended.
  • Play button now shows “Exit Game” while in a match to avoid confusion.
  • Minor visual tweaks to the Play Now screen.
  • Flag Assist accolade added - all flag holders share a net credit amount roughly equal to 1000. Solo cappers still get 2000 total. Reworked default credit gain of capture to fit.
  • Modified the terrain on Katabatic for more balanced gameplay.
  • Fixed Grav Cycle jitter issues and applied proper visual feedback on yaw.
  • Fixed Grav Cycle passenger not being able to look up/down.
  • Fixed projectiles appearing to go through generators.
  • Fixed deployables not taking proper damage from bullet-projectiles.
  • Fixed dropped pickups sometimes giving players an additional weapon.
  • Fixed call-in Laser Targeter not being able to work on some objects.
  • Moved the location of the Base Radar Sensors on some maps so they aren’t as vulnerable as before.
  • Fix for Sentinel’s Drop Jammer deployables continuing to apply jamming effects on friendly and enemy players after its death.
  • Fix for sometimes seeing overhead carets for nearby enemies through walls when a sensor is not present.
  • Added a reminder message for when a player has a flag to help address reports of players not realizing or forgetting they held a flag in CTF. (NOTE: Further changes are planned for this to limit the number of messages receive -- we know that this initial treatment is a little annoying in some cases).
  • Fixed an exploit for Jumper’s Blink Pack where players could accelerate to high speeds with little-to-no energy cost.
  • Reduced Doombringer’s Chaingun damage by 13%.
  • Doombringer’s Saber Launcher now requires a full lock-on routine (targeting, then lock-on) even for the same target.
  • Doombringer’s Saber Launcher missile will lose the ability to perform tight turns when close enough to a victim and if it has passed the victim.
  • Fix for Doombringer's Chaingun not calculating ammo correctly if player picks up a dropped ammo nugget.
  • Fix for Doombringer's Chaingun not calculating ammo correctly if the ammo skill is applied to the class.
  • Fix for Doombringer's Chaingun not spinning up the barrel of the gun faster when the buildup time skill is applied.
  • AFK timeout at the team-select screen changed from 60 seconds to 180 seconds.
  • Fixed a bug with Juggernaut’s health regeneration rate and skills creating faster than desired regeneration.
  • Sentinel’s BXT1 rifle now has a new and improved scope (visual change only).
  • Sentinel’s BXT1 rifle now has an increased charge-time while jetpacking or skiing at high speed.
  • New scope on Sentinel’s BXT1 rifle. Please give feedback if you like/dislike.
  • Better messages when a user encounters errors on login.
  • Added a new accolade ‘Air Mail’ for midair kills with explosive weapons, akin to the ‘Blue Plate Special’.
Known Issues
  • Ski Tutorial has been temporarily removed. It will be back soon.
  • The “you have the flag” message repeats at a rate that can be annoying in some situations. This will be fixed in a future patch.
  • Grav Cycle view for the riding passenger (1P & 3P) can still get in to a weird state under some conditions.
  • Accolades received before exiting and rejoining a match will not show in the Player Summary screen. They are being recorded but simply do not show at this time.

game is fun, spend some time on Tuesday didn't get much time after that, having a busy week. But its fun, I am still adjusting my keyboard controls for optimal fun :biggrin:

Oh thank god. I was complaining about this last night. I would like to see a quick switch though. Usually with the Ranger if I get a decent hit on a light with my Hummer I'll go straight for the rifle but I've been hitting 1 which switches to that targeting gun. So annoying.

New map sounds like fun. I hope they lower the cost for the additional classes. 15,000 tokens is crazy.

One question. Do you guys use 3rd person mode at all?

I used 3rd person mode when body blocking on light D. Its easier to lineup in someones way that way. Also isn't q quickswap?

Hmm everyone told me Q last night but I switched that to Spot to match up with BF3 lol.

I had another question. How do the repair tool work? Does it switch out the gun you have equipped or the one you're not using? How do I get my gun back after I'm done with the tool?

You mean on the Technician? Its your "secondary" (Your 2nd weapon is not really a secondary the Juggernauts "secondary" is a spinfusor) you just swap to that and point and click.

I meant those little repair kits that you pick up inside your base. They look like orange squares. All classes can use them.

Haha, usually around the generator rooms or somewhere inside your base, you'll see little square things hanging on the wall. If you walk up to it and press your "use" button you'll pick up a repair tool so you can fix equipment even if you're not an engineer.

Switched from Soldier to Pathfinder for the last patch as I found Solider had become really sluggish. Tried it out again today and love it once more - good patch for me so far!

I really like the jetpack change for my Pathfinder. I feel like I'm having tons of trouble keeping speeds when not on a route though. I can't quite figure out why.

I believe you can see Infiltrators if your sensors are up, but I haven't tested that theory in any depth.

Tribes Closed Beta Version 0.1.562.0

Server downtime: The Tribes Servers are expected to be down for several hours on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2011 while the patch is deployed. Watch the Server Status in Hi-Command for latest availability information.

Major Highlights since Version 0.1.549


  • The Pathfinder and Juggernaut classes are now priced at half their previous price. Players that have previously unlocked these classes will be refunded the difference between the original purchase price and the new purchase price.
  • There are now separate server regions for “N. America - East” and “N. America - West.” Select your preferred server region on the Play Now screen, or set your overall system default under the settings menu.
  • DryDock has been re-added to the CTF playlist. The map has been better optimized for performance, although additional performance improvements are still pending.
  • CTF Scoreboard now includes Class and Rank of each player. The class is shown as a three-letter abbreviation.
  • Rabbit Scoreboard has been updated.
  • Maximum number of players in a rabbit match raised to 12 (from 8).
  • Lowered credit prices for vehicles: Beowulf is 3000 credits, Grav Cycle is 600 credits, and Shrike is 4500 credits.
  • Players may now use unlocked class Skills and Perks in Training maps.
  • Explosive Looter perk gives the ability to have an extra grenade in a player’s inventory if that grenade was acquired from an ammo pickup nugget.
  • Fixed Air Show and Wheel Deal perks not reporting reduced prices in the Vehicle Pad menu.
Additional Items


  • Variety of improvements to the top-bar menu graphics.
  • Additional information is shown on the class icons on the Classes screen: how many skills unlocked, icon for when skills are available and ribbon to indicate new and promoted items.
  • Variety of other UI-related bug fixes, usability enhancements and performance improvements. More fixes and clean-ups will be coming in future patches.
  • In-game chat log has been re-written and should function well during heavy VGS flooding.
  • End of Game results in a “your team won/lost” message with your team icon.
  • Variety of audio/sound improvements and bug fixes
  • XP Summary screen has been sped up significantly and sound cues have been added.
  • "Take the flag to your flag stand" message now only appears when your team's flag is in the stand.
  • "Take the flag to your flag stand" message frequency has been moved from every nine seconds to every twenty seconds.
  • The Doombringer’s Force Field will no longer block shots when the generator is offline.
  • The legs in first-person are now hidden when zoomed.
  • Fixed issue in which team chat would persist for a user after they left a map instance.
  • Fixed issues with Doombringer's Saber Launcher not properly displaying missile notifications to vehicle passengers.
  • Fixed prompt text not showing for repair station. The location of some repair stations has been altered (across all maps).
  • Health effect sounds now stop playing when a match has ended.
  • The Jumper’s Thrust Pack contributes a lower amount of speed when used as the player’s speed increases.
  • Added the ability to boost the bass of certain sounds for users of headphones.
  • Fixed issue with weapons dry firing after using melee or throwing a grenade.
  • Players who have left and rejoined the same match will see their previously achieved accolades and awards along with new ones.
  • The Brute’s Heavy Spinfusor can now get the ‘Blue Plate Special’ accolade.
  • Skiing Tutorial re-added to the Training section on the Play Now screen.
  • Fixed Jumper’s Thrust Pack sound playing when the player dies.
  • Fixed Jetpack sounds not playing after getting into a vehicle.
  • Fixed an issue where zooming while reloading, then switching weapons, could leave the zoom overlay graphic enabled even though the player stopped zooming the actual view.
  • Visual changes to zoom on some weapons.
  • The Scrambler’s Whiteout Grenade no longer blinds friendly players, although it still will blind the instigator player.
Known Issues


  • The N. America - East region is still shown as simply "North America".
  • New settings options for Frame Rate Smoothing, Disable Help on Hud, Gamma and Bass Boost have been added to the settings screen, but are not yet functional.
  • The abbreviation for Sentinel is not showing up on the Scoreboard under class (it will show blank).
  • Rabbit in-match scoreboard overlaps the Chat Log.
  • Perk items are not always selecting the 2nd item reliably from the Classes Screen.
Biggest one for me is in bold. No more 120 ping!
