Trick to turn USB 1.1 ports into USB 2.0 ports?

He claimed that if I plug in a high capacity USB 2.0 device to my USB 1.1 ports, Windows XP would detect it and automatically download a driver that would effectively speed up my USB 1.1 ports to 80% of USB 2.0's capacity. Can anybody confirm this "trick" or is this BS?

He's absolutely correct. Plug a USB 2.0 device into a 1.1 port and it will be magically converted into a USB 2.0* port.

*USB 2.0 full speed.

True, but only if your mobo supports USB 2.0. Windows will install the updated USB drivers through windows update. If you have an older mobo, then it will not magically change. It will remain 1.1.

USB 2.0 full speed is the same as USB 1.1, they switched the name to fool stupid people a while back.

USB 2.0 high speed is the good 480mbit version you're thinking of.

Alright, so I've got one person that doesn't outright bash the possibility. I'm curious now, have you presonally seen this this happen? How can I tell if my mobo supports USB 2.0? I got my laptop (Dell Inspiron 8200) right before USB 2.0 became popular on laptops.

heh, the speed of a USB port is determined by the controller chip on the motherboard or PCI card. No amount of driver improving is going to make the least bit difference.

USB 2.0 is a marketing gimmick.

As stated earlier USB 2.0 comes in 2 varieties:

USB 2.0 Full Speed (The same as USB 1.1 only renamed as 2.0)

USB 2.0 High Speed (Different than Full Speed and 1.1, much higher throughput)

I can install the wrong drivers and make the device be recognized as something else all day. However it is not going to change the throughput at all.
