I've finally been able to switch with the arrival of http://www.one-tab.com/

Quick question for Chrome vets. When I clicked on a bookmark in my bookmark bar in Firefox while I have a pinned tab in focus (like gmail), it will automatically open in a new tab and not attempt to go to that bookmark with the pinned tab. I know I can middle mouse click my scroll wheel to open it in a new tab, but is there a setting that can be changed?

Thanks for the recommendation, I just read the glowing reviews in the Google Chrome store.

Just installed and it's great, thanks!

Works horrible for my friend.

As for the stuttering issue, I have never seen it. I'd try to update your video drivers and uninstall/reinstall flash. It could be a problem with your video card also.

My wife has exactly the same issue with Firefox and she leaves loads of tabs open for silly lengths of time as well. After a while Firefox has used up all available memory or plugin-container is acting screwy. I think I've finally convinced her to scale back her long term tab usage, that and she uses Chrome to watch videos.

Some people have said "put I have 100 tabs open while I'm doing xyz!", yes, that's fine, just don't leave them open for days on end. Firefox probably isn't the best at handling long-term browser sessions, but IMO it is just lazy and is asking for trouble to leave stuff open for that long, either through resulting browser stability/performance issues or at some point it crashes and for some reason the sessionstate file is corrupted. Sometimes I might have 50 or more tabs open but once I'm done I close them and bookmark any that I have to refer back to.

The bookmarks facility is there for a reason. With a bit of organisation it is very easy to use. In my bookmarks list I have an area where temporary bookmarks are kept (then deleted once they're no longer needed) and the rest are filed into separate folders.

Browsers have to handle an awful lot of crap, probably a lot more than any other bit of software. In a word processor you might open a document made in another package, perhaps with a bug or two in, but that's a single document and people don't tend to leave them open for days on end (the 'save early, save often' tactic is used by most sensible people), whereas website designers do all kinds of crazy things, as well as people having say ad banners which try to exploit possible vulnerabilities in the browser. People who have a multitude of tabs open are asking their browser to handle situations like that are just multiplying the likelihood of a problem.

Not stuttering in FF here... ever, across probably two dozen PCs I've used in the last 10 years. Not a fan of Chrome personally.

Old thread is old.

I'm one of those users who have 30-60 tabs open, and sync tabs/bookmarks/etc across multiple PCs and Macs. This is the reason why I've been stuck with FF, since doing so is seamless. I do hate how youtube stutters sometimes on FF and wanted to switch to a "lighter/faster" browser so I gave Chrome a shot, especially with the propaganda I read this morning about how they surpassed IE as the most used browser.

Well, here's the problem. I started moving/opening the tabs from my FF to Chrome, but halfway through, (about 30 tabs), Chrome was already up to 1.9GB of memory used, and FF was down to 300k. I remember back in the day when FF was young, we had an extension that did not load inactive tabs until you click it (now it is built-in). Chrome likes to load every single tab even if you're not using it.

I searched for an extension that can do this but was unsuccessful. So, my question to you Chrome users. How do you go about using this browser, even with its huge defect of having a separate chrome.exe for EACH AND EVERY SINGLE TAB? Or better yet, is there an extension that can help me?

yes my computer at work only has 2gb of ram and i use chrome but with 10 tabs open everything slows to a snail's pace lol...

Haha. How much ram do you have?

I always thought chrome was a pig when it comes to uses to much resources on my friend's computer.

actually the machine that locks up has 12 gigs of ram. it's an i7 machine running win7 64bit. my work laptop doesnt have the issue and neither does my 4 year old macbook pro.

makes me sad. ive tried all the "fixes" and workarounds people have tried to no avail. the issue only happens to a small amount of people so i dont think google is gonna resolve it anytime soon.

It happens to my friend's pc which is a 1 year old laptop. It is pretty powerful though. Not a i7 I don't think though.

Macbook pro is totally different. From some people I hear Firefox works better on macs too.

yeah it happens on random machines. doesnt seem like there's a pattern on config/software/hardware or anything. i can get it to happen on pandora, youtube, or anything that uses flash on that pc.

its the combo of flash/chrome, it doesnt happen on firefox. from what ive read it's a GUI crash which is why the entire OS locks up.

I usually run 4 or 5. I couldn't imagine it being any more productive to have 30 tabs open. Thats more sites than I normally use in an entire day...
My brain explodes when i get up to 10, then i clear them all out and start over. I've never understood this tab fetish some people have

Instead of bookmarking a bunch of stuff that I probably will only read once, i like to keep a lot of tabs in between sessions so i can quickly go back to articles I find but can't read right away.

That's exactly what I do. I also use tab groups to isolate related research topics. I already have too many bookmarks, so keeping tab sessions helps reduce clutter.

thats how i pile tabs up too. not bookmark worthy, but worth a read.

after switching to chrome and using OneTab, i got accustomed to forcing myself to close tabs. after a few days back on firefox, the habit caught on and right now i only have 7 tabs open, instead of my average 90+ it used to be.
