Turns out Chrome was making my chip hot! It didn't look like it was utilizing much CPU usage at all, but I completely closed out chrome, stopped all its tasks, and an running Firefox now. Temps are noticeably better. I literally watched the temps go down in CoreTemp in my tray the moment I ended all Chrome tasks. I'm going to install Firefox on my phone and table too and see if I can just get out of the Chrome ecosystem in that way at least. I've been wanting to anyway.
Google, the gift that keeps on giving.

I have used the curve optimizer in the bios to go to -25, and also adjusted voltage settings as per a tutorial. I still can't get idle temps down. Full Load temps are normal.

I'm going to do one more reseating of the CPU with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.

Kryonaut is good, but I doubt that by itself will make much of a difference. All things being equal, maybe 2-3 degrees at most. I browsed the thread quickly...what paste did you use the first two times?
What cooler are you running? (I saw peerless assassin mentioned by someone else...not sure if that's what you went with.

I had arctis mx-4 on hand so used that. Coooler is the Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO which seems to be one of the best. I may just have a slightly hotter idling temp chip but I figured I'd try one last thing. Airflow is great in my case, no hard drive cage in the front so two fans bringing in air, and an upgraded noctua exhaust fan.

Well, figured out the issue with temps, and it was a first world problem that did it.

Late last night remounting the heatsink with the Kryonaut thermal paste. For the first time in about 15 builds, I tightened the heatsink screw to the mobo too hard and snapped it. So I was fucked last night. I got onto Amazon and the only two heatsinks that could be delivered between 7-11am today were the Thermaltake Peerless Assassin and the Noctua nh-d15. All the others would be delivered Sunday. So I didn't want to downgrade to the Peerless Assassin from the Phantom Spirit, and I didn't want to be without a PC until Sunday, so I sucked it up and overpaid for the Noctua, which got delivered this morning at 10am.

Well, installed the Noctua this morning, idle temps are 43-45. UNder full load in Cinebench, 80 degrees, vs 84-86. Also as I figured, fan noise on the Noctua is a noticeable improvement.

My Phantom Spirit must have been defective.

Most likely it had an airgap or not as flat as it could be.
Yeah agreed. Definitely a bit defective.

Question. I wiped the cpu totally clean this morning of the Kryonaut I had used last night with the Thermaltake to use all fresh paste. I just didn't have quite enough Kryonaut left as the tube was super small, so I added in a bit of MX-6 in there as well. I figure they will work symbiotically together, but could that be an issue at all? Mixing thermal pastes? It was like 75% Kryonaut and 25% MX-6

Converting a 12 minute 2K mostly 50FPS video in Filmora to mp4, my cores are now just breaking 5000mhz - Temps are staying in the 60's and 70's

Not entirely sure. Some people would say don't do it but if your temps are fine, I don't see the harm.

That makes sense. I got a second small tube of Kryonaut today so will probably just do it so I don't OCD about it.

also ordered a Gigabyte 4070 Ti Super OC card, I don't upgrade vid cards much so wanted the extra memory for future proofing, since I likely won't upgrade that for 4-5 years at least.

Nice card. Register online within 30 days to get a total of 4 years of warranty.
You know all the good tips! I will do that. I went with Gigabyte as the price is right but they make solid products, and I know they stand by their products and still have pretty good CS. But I did not know about that trick!

I just visited their product page

The watercooled version of their 4080 caught my eye some time ago due to the really good price (lower than ASUS air cooled!) and I think registration got you an extra 2 years for a total of 5 years warranty. They must be overbuilding/overengineering the cards to be that confident that you won't need the warranty for that long. My current card is also an AORUS RX 6800. Has a display that shows their mascot hawk doing funny stuff like sleeping and sipping water when the card is sitting idle.

Not sure how solid Gigabyte's products are any more...

Yeah their cheap mobos and PSUs might not be much but my card hasn't blown up. Yet.

And it's a used card so it's seen some action with the previous owner too.

Speaking of cheap, the cheapest Gigabyte mobos aren't that cheap anymore. MSI seems to be the budget mobo brand now.

GIgabyte has a good reputation right now at least where I did a lot of reading about video cards. Of the big brands, they have some of the better rep for customer service for their defective products as well. So there is that peace of mind. A couple other major brands had worse customer service reputations at least from my couple of hours of research on video cards. So if something does go wrong, I'm fairly confident I'll be treated ok.

but I would not buy a power supply from Gigabyte these days, those have a pretty bad reputation. I already had a solid 850w though so didn't even need to upgrade that.

I thought I had upgraded my three case fans from the original Fractal Design ones, but I did not. So I replaced all three with BeQuiet SilentWings, and that's all she wrote for this build folks. For no reason I'm tempted to get a new case just because the one I have is old, but I like the solid Fractal Design Define R5. I removed the big hard drive cage which sat right behind the two intake fans, so the front two fans now have an unobstructed path to push air into the case. It has some nice wiring elements behind the mobo, so it's a pretty good airflow case. And very quiet. I'm now idling at my lowest temps yet by a couple degrees.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Nothing wrong with keeping a case you like.

Yeah, that is the best way. It's just a consumer itching spend but I'm gonna keep rollin with the define R5 - old school with two 5.25" optical drives and all

When I was looking at graphics cards I stupidly overlooked PNY brand cards. A 4080 super PNY is under 950 now, not much more than the 4070 Ti Super, and people seem pretty positive about them, their cooling, and fan noise. I wonder if B&H will take an exchange because I changed my mind lol

Worst case they say "no". Nothing wrong with the Define R5. I don't think the styling or features of that case are that out of date.

Keeping the case and the GC. Absolutely no need for either. Yah I like the R5. Very subdued styling which is what I had always wanted. Built like a tank. Great airflow with the built in removable cages.
