Trikcing the CPU fan contoller/sensor?

I installed a massive heat sink over my CPU instead of a HS and Fan. The case fan is placed directly next to the heat sink so I've got decent cooling on the CPU.

Now the boot process stops to indicate there is no CPU fan connected. I have to hit some key everytime I boot up or reboot.

Anyone know of an easy way to trick the CPU fan controller? There is no setting for disabling this in the BIOS.

Thanks

I know most BIOS's have an option to disable the warning, usually under power management, hardware monitoring, or something similar. What MB are you using?

The first thing I did was check the Bios.
I have an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo.
The only options I have are to turn QFan on or off and set the temp for the cpu.
I still get the error message when I turn the Qfan off.

Had same problem turning off Qfan, had to set cpu warning temp very high then turn off Qfan. Worked for a while then had to reset periodically.

Actually, it's under Hardware Monitor in the BIOS, and not user configurable.

I'm sure you have case fans. Why don't you just hook up a 3 pin case fan to the header?

That will solve the problem.

Don't you have a rear exhaust fan?

Sounds to me like your describing the PSU fans only... correct me if i'm wrong but idk how you can't have a case fan and not be able to just hook it up to the 3pin cpu fan connector

So you only have one case fan with that setup? That in itself is concerning. :Q

The rear exhaust fan came preinstalled in the case with the PSU.
In order to get at the connector, I have to take apart a fair amount of stuff which at this point I'm unwilling to do. The psu also contoller the fan speed based on load, which is kind of useful in keeping the whole thing quiet.

So what you are saying is that you only have one rear exhaust fan (tied to the PSU), and no front intake fan?

If that is the situation, you are going to have a big problem with heat buildup. Especially with 4 hard drives, and two video cards.

Why? Based on the temp monitors everything is running within the acceptable ranges while the system stays pretty quiet. I have tried gaming on it yet though so we'll see if I need another fan at that point. If I do need anther fan though, am I better off sticking a fan on my Very Large Heatsink or adding one to the front of the case for better airflow?

Well if you added a front intake fan, that would be a big help for you case air flow. It would also solve your BIOS problem, with a 3 pin fan hooked up to the CPU fan header.

It may not be crashing or anything rite now, but that kind of thermal stress isn't good for any of your hardware.

Once you get those two video cards, and CPU throwing off heat at the same time, your current cooling will not be adequate.

Putting a fan on your HS will only cool the CPU. If it's an intake fan, it will help cool everything.

Thanks for the help.

I was thnking the same thing but this is in my bedroom and so noise is an issue. That was the reasoning behind the humongous HS. Guess I'll have to get another fan and many a controller to shut it down when the system is not under heavy load.

Thanks

Well, when you disable that option in the BIOS you cut away your safety net. I hope you know what you're doing or you'll fry your CPU real quick.

In that case, my recommendation would be a thermally controlled case fan. They are very quiet when they spin down. Also, it will automatically spin up whenever needed. Be it because your room is hot that day, or because you're gaming.

There isn't an option to disable it in the BIOS with that MB. That is what this discussion has been about.

Definately check your HD temps while operating (scandisk, defrag, format, etc. - something with heavy usage), and if they are above 45C or so, I would definately look into active cooling for your HDs. Otherwise you could easily shorten their lives. I recommend MBM5 or DrvTemp, although, be careful, sometimes RAID arrays and their drivers do not allow access to SMART temp readings, and will hard-lock the system. Ran into that once on a system using a CMD 0649/0680 PCI RAID controller card.
