There is no way that trillian can win unless they open source at least their connection protocol. AOL has thousands of programmers, they have 2.

Give it a minute. I think mine disconnects after 2-3 minutes.

Yahoo messenger doesn't work through Trillian for me either....

only ICQ and MSN work without problems..

you guys are crazy. you use trillian for convenience, right? is it convenient to constantly download patch after patch just so you don't have to have aim open?

It's more than just convenience, it's also the principle of it!

Here are my reasons for using it:

1. Smaller memory/HD footprint - something that's half the size of AIM both on the HD and in memory handles all four messaging clients. With all of those wonderful AOL programmers you'd think they'd get just a litte more efficient in producing that bloated POS they put out. It's also important if you're like me and still run on a K6/200 with 48MB of RAM. Know what I mean?
2. Convenience - you have four IM clients in one, so if some of your friends don't use one service, they'll likely use the other. Why should I have four different IM clients?
3. Principle - AIM is supposed to have an open protocol. SO WHY ARE THEY BLOCKING TRILLIAN, AND NO OTHER AOL CLIENT? In fact, this seems anticompetitive and I would think the FTC would be putting them under scrutiny for their actions. It just doesn't look good for AOL from this perspective. I also don't buy the ad-blocking "ethics" argument because there are lots of hacked DLLs that suppress ads in AIM quickly and easily.

This isn't a security violation or an ad hoc client or a hack - Trillian is a major competitor. AOL is already giving it away. There's no reason for this, and now they've only gained more of my ire by sending a message that says I should get their bloatware. Foutrez AOL.

If anyone here can get on the trillian forums, report back here and let us know what is going on or if there is a fix. The forums are probably swamped right now which is why I can't get on.

Someone has to be able to get access to your ini file first. Unless someone is going to hop onto your computer and copy all your ini files for the purpose of logging into your messenger software, you shouldn't have a problem.

If aol doesn't win software wise, they'll no doubt win with bandwith fees. I wonder what the bandwidth fees are for their site.

Trillian has more features than AIM, and it takes less RAM then running MSN, ICQ, AIM, and yahoo at the same time.

I was able to connect to Trillian boards.

A user's log:

"[06:38] *** "Md" signed on at Fri Feb 15 06:38:07 2002 and is currently away.
[06:39] *** Fatal error while sending packet (10054). Connection closing.
[06:39] *** Someone else has logged onto your AIM account from another computer.
[06:39] *** See http:// www.aim.aol.com/errors/ USER_..._NEW_LOGIN.html for more details.
[06:39] *** Reconnecting to AIM as "AngelPiccadilly".
[06:39] *** Will attempt 10 connections with 60 second intervals.
[06:39] *** Connecting to AIM as "AngelPiccadilly", attempt #1.
[06:39] *** Buddy rights: 200 buddies allowed, 750 watchers allowed."

AOL is logging into our user accounts to determine whether or not our software is "unauthorized" Bloody bastards.

"Also heard from AOL insider programmers and staff: If these "unauthorized" accesses continue, eventually AOL may (and has in the past) will begin to Email AIM users, and threaten to disable or terminate their accounts, using the explanation "for your protection..."

<< Well, several people have posted about the bug. >>

and people can also get your regular aim password off your pc from running a very easily downloaded program too.

If someone can get to your pc, the last thing you should worry about is your aim.
