With the bad weather we debated not going up the mountain but decided if we didn't do it and the weather ended up staying nice we would regret it. Fortunately the weather on our side of the lake stayed nice for our mountain visit
Salt mine near top of mountain:
With some extra time on our hands we headed back to Germany to try and make the last tour of the day for Herrenchiemsee. On our way into Austria we had noticed a huge wait to get from Austria to Germany. It looked like the Germans were doing boarder checks. We checked Google Maps and, sure enough, there was a 55min wait at where Highway A1\8 crossed the boarder. We took the non-highway route into Germany and joined 8 right after the boarder check. The boarder check seems odd since you can easily avoid it.
Anyway - the snow picked up in the afternoon and we ended up being the only people on the boat to the island Herrenchiemsee is on. We were also the only tourists who showed up for the tour so we have a private tour of the palace. Sadly Bavaria does not allow pictures inside of the Palaces they own.
After that we continued driving into the snow storm on our way to Oberammergau. As it got dark we noticed some of the hotels and restaurants had strings of lights on the roofs. We felt like we were in a time warp to December.
In the morning we cleared off our car and headed to Linderhof Palace. The weather was brutal when we got there with our footprints disappearing within minutes although it did clear up some by the time we were leaving
After that it was a white knuckle drive to Neuschwanstein Castle. The roads had gotten much worse during our visit at Linderhof Palace. After a few minutes on the mountain road I was ready to turn around and take the longer but much more traveled route but we couldn't find anywhere to turn around. Instead I was slipping my way on a windy unplowed road squeezed between a mountain and a lake with no guard rail for the better part of an hour with no cell service, minimal vehicle traffic and next to no houses or buildings. This now ranks as #3 on my all time 'Worst drives' list
Sadly they had some of the mountain trails closed due to the weather so we missed the opportunity to get some of the more iconic shots of these two castles.
After our visit there we left snowy Southern Bavaria behind for clearer skies back in Munich although we were farther behind where we thought we would be so several places we had hoped to visit were closed by the time we reached the city
