Places to visit:
Nara (to see the massive Buddha)
Hiroshima/Nagasaki (Atom Bomb Memorial)
Tokyo Tower
Akihabara (if you're a technophile) - 10% of all consumer electronics in Japan are sold there.
Asakusa
Shibuya/Shinjuku
Mt. Fuji (?)
Cheap food can be found in YOSHINOYA restaurants scattered everywhere - they serve gyudon, which is essentially grilled beef served over rice. Fairly cheap, by Japanese standards. Also check convenience stores (LAWSON, FamilyMart, etc.) for 'cheap' food. Take rail whenever possible, or hoof it - avoid taxis (expensive). Most stations in Tokyo are less than 600-800m apart.
