I tried Googling it but got lazy and can't find anything showing the actual Canadian homicide rate over the last, say, ~30 years. I did find one saying that their 2010 homicide rate was a 44-year record low, which calls into question the supposed sudden knifing epidemic in Canada.

You should look up the 21 foot rule. The distance a police officer needs to identify the threat, classify it as warranting deadly force, draw his sidearm and shoot two rounds has no bearing whatsoever on the distance needed to be maintained to ensure relative safety.

Fucking forum full of morons.

Are there conservatards here? Yup. So we're obviously not in academia, now are we?

DomSer, you have been outed as a moron yourself.

you seem to find it interesting that more murders are being committed with a knife in canada, while i find it surprising you have a 7% increase in murders even with less efficient weapons being used and better health care availability.

Code:
1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011
2.38	2.69	2.58	2.19	2.06	2.01	2.14	1.96	1.85	1.77	1.78	1.78	1.86	1.74	1.95	2.06	1.86	1.80	1.83	1.81	1.62	1.73

LOL at pointing to a one year increase as a basis for discussion. 2011 would still be the lowest murder rate in the last 20 years other than 2010.

There was a lower murder rate in 2010 that normalized in 2011. Of course, that doesn't make for good reporting.

I have a google news alert for whenever there is 2 or more stabbed in a single incident. Once alerted I will post it here, and bring up all the recent threads I made, and hopefully bring to light the epidemic in Canada and encourage Canadians to push for some thoughtful legislation to curb knifing.

Add/remove data will let you see back to 1961. Rises and peaks from mid 70s to mid 80s and has been a downward trend ever since.

What a dumb troll.

Sorry, between this twit and monovillage....Some dumb down and degrade discussion to the point of it being a non-starter. They got me. I am just at a lost for any constructive effort that I may add.

Not sure why you'd prefer to be oblivious to the numerous deaths caused each year by stabbing. I guess only gun violence gets on your radar huh? There is other violence too you know.

Seems the same is true in the US. But yet we have a shooting epidemic in the United States right?

You don't even have to rush a knife-wielder, you can run away.

Fail x 2

Hell, you can throw rocks at that point. Give an 8yr old with a decent arm a chunk of granite and he can be the Action News 7 Hero - of - the - day

7 people stabbed in Vancouver

C'mon man. Your google alerts miss this or something?

No one is dead (as of now), but 6 had to go to hospital.

Now imagine if he had a gun.

I must have made my parameters too specific. Thanks for the heads up.

7 now. How many will the next one be before Canada follows in their brother to the south's footsteps and begin passing some thoughtful legislation on this matter?

I don't want to question if he had a gun, I'd rather question in a positive direction. What if he had a mental health screening and was banned from owning a knife or similarly sharp or pointy object? Don't EVER say it could be worse, always think of ways to make it better. Think like an American for a change.

I am sure they are stab-free zones, at the least.

I researched this recently. Actually canada and the US have very similar violent crime rates. Less homicides in Canada, but more of some other kinds of violence. Crime rates in both have been dropping a great deal over the past decade.

We had a thread on 'violent crime' rates before, and I believe the rates in Canada were only comparable to the US because of differences in how violent crime was defined.

Specifically, I think it was simple assault included in Canadian rates but not US (only aggravated assault and worse).

Here's an idea: Let's have a group of people form a club called the National Knife Association. They advocate people carry knives with them at all times. Switch blades, flip-open, bowie knives, machetes...

looks more like fear to me

The quote (armed society is polite) probably refers to the times when you can't rely on police. That would be things like riots, natural disasters, or living in a part of town that lacks police. Back in Django's time, your town would have 1 cop. Your gun was the only thing keeping you safe.

Everyone should keep in mind that Canadians do have guns. Lots of guns. You're just not allowed to carry them in public.
