first build

I can write to cd's on my samsung DVD burner using nero but not using windows. when I drag and drop a file to the cd icon I get an error message saying:

E:\ is not accesible. Incorrect function.
but then nero writes to it without a problem.
the drive reads cd's without problems and I can install software using the drive.

any Ideas? I'm sure it's gotta be a windows issue...

You can't drag and drop to a regular blank CD in Windows. You have to format the disc for "packet writing" first.

I never use this method of writing so I don't know where/how you do it.

I can drag and drop to a cd just fine, should see a pop up in the tray saying "files waiting to be written to CD". check ther record settings under windows, make sure box is checked to enable recording.

Interesting, I just tried what humanure suggested and it did work. It looks like it copied them to a holding pen in C: to burn later.

I did have a blank CD in the drive, were you trying it with an empty drive or with a CD that wasn't completely blank gpasdf?

tried both. If the cd-r has files on it, it says it is a read only drive. It seems as though windows does not recognize the DVDR as a recording device. I even went into administrative tools and made IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service automatic rather than manual but no luck.

My Computer > Properties for the DVD burner (NEC 3550A) does show a recording tab with allow recording checked.

I didn't do anything to turn recording on, I just installed Nero Express and have always used it not drag & drop.

I believe you need a CDRW disc to use drag and drop. This is different from a CDR disc. A CDRW disc can be used for either a closed (CDR type)session, multi session, or drag and drop (UDF) CD. A CDR can be used for closed or muti session only, with no capability for drag and drop.

I would suggest staying with the finalized CDR because they're cheaper, burn faster, last longer, and they're more compatible with other machines.

^ I thought that too, since packet writing used to be only recommended for CD-RW.

But this isn't packet writing, Windows just creates a temp folder on the hard drive to hold a set of files to burn later to CDR. Once you finish dragging it looks like it burns a session just like Nero would.

Maybe Nero disables Windows drag and drop for the burner?

*N/M

I have Roxio and Nero and can still drag in files.

thanks for the responses. I tried the cdr in windows XP (as opposed to cd-rw) on my laptop and it works just fine.

Unfortunately, there is no record tab. I wish it was that easy. In fact it is this lack of a "record tab" that I am trying to sort out. I think that this is the source of my frustrations.

Ah the pleasures of the first build. I guess its no big deal. I just would rather have it working. Ironically it worked just fine in the dell I had previously installed it.

It's early enough in the installation process, that I may try reinstalling.

Well it is strange that it worked on the dell and not your current computer. But there is one more thing you can try. If you feel comfortable you can edit the registry to identify CD-RW drive as a recordable drive. This should then bring back the recording tab and hopefully fix the windows cd burning.
Here is the Microsoft page that walks you through the steps:
CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device

Just make sure you backup any keys that you change (as noted on the Microsoft page)

Hmmmm. So close but yet so far away.

Thanks to shawn130c, I thought I had made some progress.
It did enable the "record tab" but now when I try and write to the disk it says that there is no disc in the drive.
Two steps forward, two steps back.
I even took out the DVD-ROM (master) from my DELL to supplement the DVD/RW (slave), in an effort to replicate my previous systems set-up. no luck.

not sure if it is ultimately worth it. bummer.
