Trouble with DHCP configuration on win-2000 server

Hi there

I am trying to distribute the IPs provided by my ISP to the clients using DHCP.
But I am not able to figure out how to configure it in my comp lab. I tried something but it didn't work.

server: win-2000
client: win-me

Information provided by ISP:
IP range: a.b.c.226 - a.b.c.254
router: a.b.c.225
subnet: 255.255.255.224


I am setting my servers address as : a.b.c.226, subnet: 255.255.255.224


DHCP settings:
IP range excluded from DHCP: a.b.c.226 - a.b.c.226 ( server's IP)
subnet: 255.255.255.224 (as provided by my ISP)
router information: a.b.c.225

The result is that the DHCP is not working.

Is there any other way of using DHCP? Like setting internal IPs (10.10.1.1 - 10.10.1.xxx) and using the server's internet connection to connect all the client PCs to the internet.

Please help me out. Its my first time with DHCP.

First of all I would check and make sure that the DHCP service is started. Then I would verify the DHCP server is authenicated to the Active Directory. To check this open the DHCP mamager and look at the icon directly under the DHPC Tree root. Make sure it is green and not red. If it is green and you still are not pulling IP's on the workstations. Then I would go to the Workstation and run winipcfg and release the IP and then renew it again. If that doesn't work then I know of a Bug in SP2 for WIndows 2000 server that prevented a twelve digit IP address on a DHCP server. If you have a xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address then the DHCP server will not authenicate to A.D. so you may need to install a router. Which isn't a bad idea since it looks like you do not have any type of Firewall on you network now.

The DHCP server is running.
The green lights are there.
I am releasing and renewing the IPs also.
I have xx.xxx.xx.xxx 10 digit IPs.

But DHCP is not working.

When you release and renew does it give you an error on the workstations?

I dont get any errors on workstations after renewing.

cant remember if you even need these, but have you got client for MS networks installed and all tcp/ip protacols? and account details on the server? are you logging into the server?

can you ping the server?

are you using a domain or a workgroup do they match?

can you ping yourself IE ping 127.0.0.1?

are you using a hub? router? crossover cable?

if you have tried all these please ignore my ignorance ....
