Trouble with file sharing between 2 home computers

I've had trouble sharing files between home computers for a long time, if i do it through "My Network Places" the files take forever to send for some reason, even though it should be sending the files from one computer to another at max speed. I just open up ICQ on both computers usually and use the ICQ file sharing thing and it goes much faster, so that seems weird. ICQ sometimes sends stuff very slowly also.

Sorry if that's confusing. Anyways, both computers are on Windows XP SP2 (though i had this problem back on SP1 as well. Anyone has a similar problem or know how to fix it? I feel like i've tried everything.

Have you tried mapping the drives? That seems to speed up file transfers betwen the computers. IE.open windows explorer, click tools, map network drive, and then click browse and map it to the drive you are transfering the files to. How is your network set up?

Don't think that would help, at least not much. It's still ridiculously slow (has always been really), anyone have any ideas?

how slow is slow? specify your network speed and then the actual rates you're getting.

It should be 100mbits, though transferring a 130 megabyte file took a little under an hour to transfer.

wat kind of network setup u got............give some more details?

check nic settings...if set to autonegotiate, try changing to 100mb full duplex on both. Also maybe try a different cable.

Mapping the shares to a drive actually IS a good idea. When you open up My Network Places, there's a delay while the computer searches through the network. Using Windows Explorer, you should be able to copy and paste to a mapped share in no time.

Try it.

I should mention one more thing. Try pinging the computers from both PCs and see if you lose any packets. If you don't know how to ping, let us know and someone will help.

I did the Duplex thing and it just froze when i tried to access a folder on the other comp...it freezes a lot like that when trying any method i have. I get the ole "Not Responding" error.

bump, still having this trouble, i've tried just about everything and can't figure it out. One time i tried it and it worked fine, but that almost never happens. Usually when i try to access a folder on the other computer it will just freeze, same vice versa. Says to transfer a 170mb file it would be 182 minutes. I know that's not right.
