Trouble with RADEON 9800 PRO

omg, i'm so mad! LOL i just got in the mail my new sapphire radeon 9800 pro 128mb and thought i'd get rocking... but nooo... i have an old kt333 abit at7 card which is AGP 4x... and stupid thing gives me VGA error on self diagnostic... 1 long + 2 short beeps...

naturally i pluged in external power supply to the card and it's sitting in AGP slot pretty tight, so i doubt it's connectors problem... what can it be??? HEELLP!!!

that card has no problems at 4x agp. you've got another problem on your hands. maybe defective card.

It will run fine on your MOTHERBOARD. You must completely remove your old video drivers prior to installing the ati drivers. Use driver cleaner in safe mode. Reseat your video card in the agp slot also.

@sugarkang: The video card works fine, i just tried it in my older a7v133 system.

@Bucksnort: I can't get to any driver installation as the system doesnt complete the boot up process because it doesnt see the video card.


so far, my bottom line is that ABIT AT7 doesnt work with SAPPHIRE RADEON 9800 PRO. I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Intall your old video card , remove all drivers, use driver cleaner, shut down, and install new card and drivers... also check your bios settings for irregularities...hope this helps...

If you're getting BIOS beep code errors it has nothing to do with drivers. Drivers don't come into play until you get into the OS. I don't own an AT7 but I find it hard to believe that the 2 will not work together. Maybe try flashing the MB's BIOS up to the latest version?

Edit: If that doesn't work and your old video card works fine I'd lean toward what sugarkang said - probably a bad video card.

Why do you say that? I use a GF FX 5900 card currently but I'd never say that ATI sucks... They make really good GPUs IMO.

thank you everyone who replied... unfortunately i still am unable to resolve the issue... but i've had a bit of a development. With a pci card i can boot up winxp and it sees radeon. After installing Catalyst 4.2 it was even identified as radeon 9800, but it says that device isn't operational.

Also, the card seems to work OK in my other, much older, a7v133 based system.

The AV7 has the latest bios already... so that's shouldnt be an issue. I'm begining to lean towards KT333 in some motherboards and RADEON 9800 incompatability as i've seen quite a few people reporting this problem, especially on rage3d forums... we all have in commong just one thing... KT333!

sugarkang has the right idea,try it in another PC to confirm it`s not faulty,as to your KT333 board,well it should work fine,all you can do is make sure you`ve the latest BIOS update like Robor posted.

You could try clearing the CMOS and making sure the video card is firmly seated in the AGP slot,no ATi cards don`t suck,I should know since I`m typing with one right now .

Btw what PSU are you using?Hope it`s up to the job of powering a 9800 Pro.

Try fail safe bios settings. Turn off fast writes in bios.
