Troubleshooting Problem

I am dealing with a small camera system in a single building location. The equipment is all of good quality with the centerpiece being a Honeywell HRG8 DVR. Cable is supplied by Cox Cable to a top brand modem. Here is where I get lost, the modem has a commercial/static IP address of 70.16.16x.xxx and I can ping it remotely. The DVR, downstream on the local network side has an address of 70.164.24X.xxx and is using port 8000. I cannot ping that device. Up until recently I was able to remotely log into the DVR using its IP address and my User name and password. Something has happened and I can't log in any longer. I have tried cycling the router and I have re-booted the DVR and I have checked all connections. Nothing will allow me to remotely view the cameras but everything is working correctly locally. The thing that mystifies my novice mind is the 70.164.24X.xxx address downstream of the router. Normally you don't see addresses of that type on that side of a router and of course you can't access them. Any ideas appreciated.

You should be connecting to the modem's WAN IP address (with port number), and your router should be forwarding those requests to the DVR. Unless your router is configured (port forwarding/UPnP/DMZ) to pass port 8000 to the DVR's local address you won't be able to connect to it. You didn't mention having a router, so I suspect your modem is a combo modem/router. Regardless, you will need to log into the router to check the settings and/or reconfigure it.

Thanks AnonymouseUser. As I said I am not a networking person. I know just enough to survive. I actually did wonder if the port forwarding had gotten messed up somehow. On your advice I will check router configuration. Thanks again.

It sounds to me that you have a small subnet assigned to you and your router is not NAT'ing but just routing. If this is the case than you would not need to use the modem IP ad all. Sounds like an issue with your modem or your provider. Can you explain better the hardware you have, modem/router/etc?

Thanks ccbadd and everyone. I just found the problem and it had nothing to do with the hardware or the setup. Apparently a serviceman from Cox cable or perhaps an office mouse decided to cancel the static IP address we had used for years and gave us a brand new worthless dynamic address. I had it changed back to static and now we are off and running. Thanks
