30 MPG in a Crown vic? Lets be real here. You can maybe acheive that under incredibly ideal situations for a short duration but that is by no means real world averages that you get on a day to day basis.

My dad had an '01 Grand Marquis and had no problem averaging 28MPG on the highway. He's pretty lightfooted though.

I'm sure if a bunch of us formed a committee and scrutinized your life choices (material things, lifestyle, hobbies, habits, etc..) we would find a few things we would find things a we disagree with as well. Would you like being told that "you shouldn't/couldn't" continue with that choice?

In that case, I recommend you buy the biggest fullsize truck you can. Get a Ford F-350 dually with the crew cab or a Dodge turbo diesel with the mega cab.

I suggest you visit CrownVic.net and do some reading. With 2:73 gears it's absolutely possible to achieve 30 mpg highway. I drive the Interstate to and from work every day and yes, it's normal. Lots of people achieve great mileage with these cars, with the V8.

I was just going to tell you that there's no way in hell you'll regularly get 30mpg out of a CV, but we don't have 2:73's and we don't have a highway.

im very happy with my dodge ram. its a 2001 and has a 5.2L in it, has lasted 175k miles so far and still going strong. i have been a chevy guy traditionally, as well as driving chevys and fords for work for the most part. my dodge is very comfy compared to the f150 and the silverado, and so far i havent had many big ticket repairs to deal with. that means they are all still waiting to happen, but at 175k miles im ok with what ive gotten out of it so far.

i dont really NEED a truck full time anymore, but i do need a decent vehicle that will carry the 400lbs of tools i carry around with me everyday. my old intrepid just couldnt withstand that weight for an extended period. i do enjoy my truck immensely tho, and would have to think real hard on trading it for a smaller, more efficient car. im ok with how much it costs me weekly for gas.

Chevy S-10 ZR2. Hate it. Been more trouble than its worth.
Would not recommend any GM product right now. If they are getting better, its hard to tell. Give them another few years to catch up with Ford. Chrysler I cannot comment on.

So you're basically using a truck designed in the early 90's as a comparrison to current products?

My grandfather has a 99 S-10 and it's been reliable for him.

I drive an 06 Crew Cab Silverado with 84K miles on it and it's been a good truck. Only problem I had with it involved pulling a Mercedes out of the side of it.

Yup. Civvi cars get 2:73s or 3:27s, mostly 2:73s though. Some P71s (PIs) get 3:55s from the factory! No fair!

Just because it has a V8 doesn't mean it's a gas hog. When cruising, they don't use that much gas, It's when you put your foot to the floor that they start drinking the gas.

OP should as other advised in the other thread buy a less expensive economical commuter car and buy an older Chevy or Ford truck for his truck duties.

Though driving a truck is sooooo much more comfortable than being in a little econobox. It's roomy, they absorb bumps better, you have better visability and if you get a 2 door you don't have to worry about friends asking for rides.

I have a summer daily driver and a beater truck for home and garden work and the 4x4 is nice in the winter. But 15mpg and driving like a truck is too much to take daily all year round, so I drive the Mark VIII 6 months of the year. Best of both worlds.

Average mileage no, but the Ford 4.6 Modular can get great highway mileage.

Not if it has a truck suspension, it doesn't. And you may not have to worry about friends asking for rides, but you do have to worry about: friends asking you to help them move, friends asking for delivery service of that new <insert oversized item here> that they just bought, strangers asking you to pull them out of the ditch/river/mud/etc, and so on.

As others have pointed out, purchasing a truck for your daily driver with your stated commute isn't something I would do intentionally. My daily commute is ~32 miles one way, so my truck (2002 Ford F250 SuperDuty, crew cab, 6.8L V10, auto, 4x4, Off Road package, camper package, etc - ~15mpg average) is parked most days and I drive my Honda Accord since I have that available to me. The truck is used when I go hunting, pull my camper, or otherwise need truck capabilities.

That's backed up by a number of forums/websites/reviews/ect. If you don't agree with it fine. Not all drivers or cars, or MPG averages per road trips are the same.

I have owned three 4.6L V8 Crown Vics, ALL of them have done 30 mpg highway with reasonable driving. It really doesn't matter what you think about it, I know about it. I also know lots of Panther owners who get similar mileage.

A 2wd F150 is about the best riding truck there is, it has a lot better ride than most cars. Notice I didn't say handling, I said ride.

If you're a gambler, the Mahindra diesels are supposed to be here mid to late Spring.

But, those are going to be gambles on multiple levels for the early adopters.

It would solve your problems though.

I was excited about the Mahindra diesel pickup when it was announced a few years ago and we were told it would be inexpensive. Now that the pricing it out I'll pass. $20-25k for a Civic with a bed and a puny diesel engine from India is waaaayy to much.

I want to like diesel but it's pricing vs regular gas can get really wonky. For a year or so around here it was running $.60 to a full dollar or more a gallon than normal gas pretty much negating the per gallon improvemens. It's a bit more back in parity and about $.10 to $.20 a gallon making it worthwhile but you still run the risk of it going out of control again.

Ignore if you are a greaser or have a good source of biodiesel for cheap.
