True? CNN says lower octane on high octane-recommended doesn't hurt mileage.

A couple of detonations are not going to kill an engine. If they did there wouldn't even be a need for knock sensors!

My 2005 Tacoma recommends premium. I can testify that it is definitely "smoother" when running on Premium and seems to strain less and pull smoother when towing something or driving up big inclines...but I've gotten my best tanks of gas on regular...so go figure.

Just my anecdotal evidence. I'm very aware of how engines handle the different octanes...but honestly I do not know that there is any true difference in gas mileage in general useage...my experience...neglidgeable.
