I have a Antec SX1030B and the PS it came with is driving me nuts!!. I have an Athlon XP 1800+ with an MSI KT266 Pro so I guess its sucking alot of juice and thats whats causing the high noise levels. But for the love of God you gotta help me!!!!!!. Can anyone tell me of a good but quiet PS for my XP?

If you can afford it, a PC Power & Cooling Silencer PS would be the best Or you could just change the fan to a Panaflo L1 80mm.

PC Power & Cooling Silencers are definitely great power supplies, but they are extremely expensive. If you've got the money though, go for it.

i was thinking about doing something to mine... i've got one of those enermax whisper psus with fan control except i've never heard it actually control any of the fans..

can I swap out the fans in this power supply? Seems like a waste of $70 for something called whisper that isn't whispering, rather, its talking.

Easily. Get a same sized 12V(could be 24V though) of your choice and solder it in place.

Or get a Enermax with FC... fans will run @ a slightly slower speed but scale up when you need it as temps rise. The PP&C is louder than the Enermax (38DBA for the 400W version) at low temps and about the same at higher temps. Benefit of the enermax is that it's cheaper and the noise scales to case temps.

Also, not to say you should rely on your PSU to cool your case/CPU, but the Enermax has 2 fans... one 80MM standard exhaust out the back and a 92MM fan pulling air from above the CPU... you get an added benefit in cooling.

If you are planning on swapping out your PSU fans and don't know what you're doing... don't bother. The capacitors keep a charge in them strong enough to kill you.

This is a nice quiet psu: Ennermax (350w) 365AX-VE ATX2.04 with PAPST 1500rpm fan, noise between 14-20 dB.

the pcp&c silencer 400W also is a variable thermal-sensitive fan so most of the time its very quiet. it's only 38 db under a pretty heavy load. One nice thing about it is how much wattage you get on the 3.3 + 5.

Be sure it's the psu fan before getting in very deep- more often than not, the cpu fan is to blame.....

If the fan is noisy, making scraping sounds, etc., it's defective and should be returned/replaced. If it's loud, running at high speed, then the temp control circuit may be defective, sending the fan to high speed all the time. Check this by unplugging the case fans and giving the system a workout, the fan should speed up as the system warms.

The Antec 300w supplies are usually quiet, this does not mean silent. Peeps moving up from much older systems with 200-235w supplies may notice the increased noise more than others.

There are some tricks to reduce the noise, like replacing stamped grilles with wire grilles, and switching to quieter (lower cfm) fans. Depends on how involved you want to get, and how anxious to void the warranty....

The quietest power supply that I ever had is the Antec PP-303X.

It uses a thermally controlled sleeve bearing fan running at extremely low rpm and does not pick up speed until the case air goes above 90F. When I put my hand over the fan, I can hardly feel any air moving. Even compared to the Enermax dual fan when cool, it still wins the contest.

I did not keep it for long because it requires stronger case fan to compensate for sufficient case ventilation. Thus, negate all the noise advantage.

In my Addtronics 7890A case, it has brackets for 8 case fans. I use the Enermax dual fan PS plus thermostatic controlled case fans to keep the noise down. I use a larger number of fans running at very low rpm.

Ok this is great info. peeps. But the one thing you need to remember is that my set-up is sucking alot of Juice, which causes psu's to be a little more noisy than usual. When I had an Asus CUSL2 and PIII 733 in my 1030B the PSU was definantly less noisy. Dose anyone have an AMD T-Bird or XP setup that is using a almost silent PSU?, if so what PSU are you using and where can I find one?

I have never seen one of these, but they claim to be noiseless. They sure make some sweet heatsinks too...

I got a Enermax 431w, I disconneted the big fan and put the other one on 7v. It's almost silent. One question, does the power supply need that much cooling? 2x fans

My rig ate up a lot of juice and really strained the fan rpms. So I installed two Panaflo 80mm's from MPJA in the power supply, one for intake and one for out take. Couldn't be quieter. Lovin' every minute of it. I can actually hear the dialogue on my dvd movies now. LOL.
