Queue up the Trumptard excuses for Trump claiming he was going to single-handedly do something nobody else could do.

Excuse list
Obama's fault
He was joking when he demanded denuclearization.
You people don't understand it
You took Trump literally.
Others have done worse

Trump mulling a North Korea version of the JCPOA except Kim can keep his nuclear weapons stockpile. Way to go Donnie!

The Art of the Deal is apparently letting the other side totally turn you over and begging for it.

This is a stunning capitulation and a total disaster of foreign policy. What do you think the Iranians think right now is the right course of action?

A good friend who fought in NK recently passed away and now I'm glad he isn't here to see this happening. We have a cease fire agreement with NK, we are technically still at war with them.

And the fool capitulates, wasting the time and lives of those who sacrificed and served our nation over there. Fuck him and fuck the Republican party.

So CNN is reporting what the NYT said? When this doesn't materialize, I doubt you'll be back for your crow.

NYT has been spot on about dumb shit Trump was contemplating. There isn't any thought or planning, many times it's the last person in Trump's ear. I've seen him change his mind in the same sentence.

Things which look like safe assumptions at this point:

1. NK will work on nukes no matter what "agreement" we make on them.
2. With the exception of some isolated incidents (e.g. a few ad hoc kidnapping the citizens of other countries) NK is not externally aggressive and will continue not to be.
3. There is little advantage to the US or rest of world in maintaining the "armistice" status quo that wouldn't also apply to a formal peace deal officially ending the war.
4. NK has basically nothing of value to in trade to us or the rest of the world absent nuke technology or maybe some low-value commodity products.

Therefore throwing off the "well we've been hostile with them since the 1950s" paradigm, I'm not sure a reasonable deal that actually supports our long-term strategic interests wouldn't consist of something like what's in this story. Combined with a formal peace deal it recognizes reality as it is, not as we wish it would be. We acknowledge NK nukes will be produced no matter what, despite if there's a deal. We acknowledge the regime, while a humanitarian disaster to its own people, doesn't represent a huge global security threat as NK isn't attacking SK or anything else directly anytime soon. And we acknowledge the bigger threat is NK giving nukes to others less concerned about self-preservation than they are (insert terrorist group, or bitter ethnic/tribal rivalry group here) so that's what we should be working on stopping.

Of course, Trump is the worst possible POTUS to execute the stuff I just said above.

Meh, who cares if we have a dead US citizen and Trump paid $2 million bill for "watching" Otto.

Who cares we ceased military exercises off the peninsula.

Who cares we elevated Kim's status around the world.

Anything better then a Dem.

Do you shit up every thread just for recreation? Trump will be gone sooner or later (hopefully sooner) and NK isn't suddenly going to turn into Sweden when DJT passes from the scene. Eventually we'll need to deal with the reality of the world like it is and stop treating places like NK and Cuba with the same approaches that haven't worked in 60 years.

North Korea has nuclear technology. The best thing that we can do as a country, is stop ramping up rhetoric that could get thousands/millions of people killed, and act diplomatically.

Now, assuming Strongman Trump isn't just doing this because he likes Jong Un's style, the hard work begins, in which the US ties US relations with the NK government to NK's government actually doing things that can help the people/stop murdering its own people.

It shouldn't surprise anyone that NK is a total basket case. They've been demonized, often for good reason, for 60+ years, and they also have the strongest Empire in human history massing troops on its border (nevermind the war it fought there) for over 70 years.

This isn't some victory for Strongman Trump, as it is an opening.

My concern is that Strongman Trump is doing this for the wrong reasons.

All of that said. How could anyone think that diplomacy with NK is good, but, diplomacy with Iran, and especially Cuba, is bad?

Cuba's totalitarian government would have collapsed decades ago had the US maintained relations with it over the past 60 years. But you isolate an already isolated place, and it can tough it out and like an organism evolves to be something different, that isolated country can evolve its own particular culture and identity. And then it's much harder for it to "change" after.

Relations with Iran also need to be thawed. Obama attempted to do it, but Strongman Trump and Friends seem to actually want to start murdering Iranians live on television.

There is plenty of good that Strongman Trump, or any US leader can do. None of it involves murdering people on television.

One of the few times Putin told the truth was when he said NK will eat grass before they give up their nukes.

They already do and those aren't mutually exclusive, some Norks would think grass is an improvement. Millions have died of malnutrition there over the decades. The Monty Python sketch would have to start with eating grass and go down from there if the Pythons were North Koreans.

If that means pointing out how the US is ceding their authority as leader of the free world and a shining example for the same. then guilty. Evil needs to be constantly condemned.

This short clip from Trevor Noah from two years ago is all of a sudden relevant again. Leave it to Trump to fuck it up again.

The “leader of the free world” USA has been leading us down a fruitless path on NK for decades and perhaps a change in direction is in order like Obama did with Cuba.

Does Cuba have nukes? Might change things a bit. Bedides you people are still bitching about Obama attempting to normalize relations with Cuba. Trump put that on the "reverse everything Obama" train. Besides you people decried the brown menace talking with our enemies. Trump has made things worse with Iran and NK. Shooting from the lip with no plans behind them because Trump is fucking lazy. He doesn't want to do the hard diplomatic work.
