...and NK will have bought themselves another year or two to get a deployable weapon ready. That is what all of those 'agreements' have been about. That is what it is about every time NK comes to the table. Every time the situation gets tense and it looks like the US or some other country might actually do something about their weapons program they sit down at the negotiation table and make some kind of deal, then a while later we find out that they never even started to honor their end of it, they just used it to defuse the situation while they continued their weapons program.

It's nice in that it seems tomorrow will be a nuke-free day. In terms of objective benchmarks, I see an agreement to do something at some point on the part of NK and that we are ending exercises with SK. In substance, I don't see how this is materially better a deal than this Administrations predecessors.

This is an agreement so vague as to be functionally useless to us at least but gives everyone political cover.

This was all just a big show for Trump and so he wins though. We give up something, NK does nothing. We legitimize one of the worlds most despotic dictators as an all around great guy and his super oppressed people as good peeps.

SK isn't happy. Japan isn't happy. Canada and Europe is not happy (Trump had to act tough at the G7 to look tough to KIm pre-summit). So all our major allies are not just pissed but also insulted, all so Trump could get a reality tv show moment.

Do you think his base will read past any headline besides 'historic meeting'? They will just see that and assume this was groundbreaking one of a kind stuff and move along still worshiping dear leader. You can't put this shit into context with his supporters with all the past times NK has done the same thing over the last 30 years, without being legitmized to this level. They will just dismiss it as propaganda or something. So really, at the end of the day, what matters it that Trump gets headlines with keywords in them like 'historic' so he wins folks. The future of America may be less bright but Trump plays the media like fiddles yet again.

There's ground between "We'll do it someday" and a detailed timetable. This is much closer to the former. Remember we have something that Kim wants and that is the end to war exercises, a material tangible thing. That was high-value chip in The Game. We cashed that in up front. What was the quid pro quo? What did we get of equal or greater value?

Instead, a prudent person wouldn't have given that away but have a series of mutual expectations along the line of "We will do this if you do that. Once that happens we move forward", planning things as reality takes shape.

What does it matter? That's obvious and it's not the exercises in themselves which are nearly important as the leverage (which we no longer have) represents.

Vancouver seems pretty cool, they still have the mushroom festival and I dont mean the cooking kind. But they have earthquakes and there always the potential of tsunamis from hawaii

Every time the US & the ROK stage joint exercises the DPRK has to respond with heightened readiness of their own because they don't trust us. The chances of somebody doing something stupid increase. So I think it's good to not do that as a gesture of goodwill. We can go back to it any time we feel the need.

Greater dialog is also good. Too bad Trump couldn't see it that way with Iran. The way he's handling that doesn't give anybody reason to trust us.
